front discs and pads

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

Did my front discs and pads today, they're now catching really bad, binding is it?

No idea why.

Any ideas?

Got back from test drive and they were very hot and a bit smokey.

That doesn't sound TOO unusual - new stuff has to bed in, and before it does, it often gets a bit hot and smelly as it does so.

However - did you check the caliper pistons? You must have had to have pushed the pistons back in before fitting the new pads, were they easy to get back in? You should be able to push them back in by hand, if you can't and have to start using tools, then they may have seen better days.

Did you look at the caliper pistons? Again, if they have a lot of corrosion on them, when you push them back in for new pads, the corroded parts are now running through the seal, and cannot move freely without sticking.

And you did take the top off the brake fluid reservoir and check that there wasn't too much fluid in there too right? Again, when you push the pistons back, the fluid level rises in the master cyliner reservoir...

The pistons were a bit crusty, I understand bedding in but they were properly catching.

Everything works fine, until you tighten up the disc locating screw? OR put the wheel on and tighten it down, then thats when the trouble starts.

It locks up and I mean not just slightly catching but really bad.

The reservoir is rather full, would that make a difference?

If not will i have to take the pistons out?

Did you take off the res cap when pushing the pistons back ?

Yes I did remove the cap.

Possibly wrong discs? Maybe?

I'd go with sticking piston/sliders.

You can sometimes free the pistons up without removing them but it might only be a short term solution.

I pushed them back in, i cleaned and regreased the sliders, the piston went back in easily.

How about the pads where they nice and free in the carrier could be jamming on against the disc haven't had it that bad in the past but normally make sure mine fit well and put a tiny smear of copper ease onto the pad where the carrier contacts it

Actually I just re read your post did you check the disc offset on the top hat

Probably not the technical term but the Part from the outer face of the disc to the front of the bell

take into account about 3mm for worst case of wear should be the same if not you have the wrong discs
