What could this switch be?

Featured Replies

Is it an ex-fleet car perhaps? Looks just like the switch tracking devices often use, which allow you to switch it to 'personal' mode which stops your personal use being tracked for privacy reasons. These devices are often removed before sale, but cheaply and quickly, so the switches are left behind rather than leaving a hole.

This makes a lot of sense. Anyhow, I will take it apart, when I have time, and if I don't figure it out, I will contact the company, that had the car from new until I bought it, for more info. And ofcourse, I will let you all know about the results:)

Well, looks like RobM was right:) Today I took it apart, and first I found a bunch of wires that were not supposed to be there, and a RS232 connector. I thought that they took out the device that was connected to RS232 and left the wires. Upon a closer look, I spotted a metal box and RS232 is probably for programming. Photos are attached (I blurred the numbers, just in case). When I googled for numbers on the box, I didn't find anything, but since the box has "vodafone" written on it and two connectors for antennas it has to be some sort of tracking device.

One photo shows a bunch of wires, with marked RS232 connector, connector which goes to the switch and a metal box. Second photo is of the box itself.

Nope, it's not that smart, just a tracker,iIt has two antennas and it was getting power from light switch. Device, wiring and antennas are on the photo attached. Mistery solved:)

Sorry, what is the switch actually for then, cos it can't be an on/off for a tracking unit for obvious reasons.

'Tony, I think this motah I've just twokked has a trakker?!'

'That's okay Jase, just look for the switch, turn the unit off, and give the loud pedal some welly!'

I think the correct answer to this is the one from RobM, few posts before: "Looks just like the switch tracking devices often use, which allow you to switch it to 'personal' mode which stops your personal use being tracked for privacy reasons."
