Cambelt & Service Query

Hey,

So my 56' petrol Octavia vRS is due it's annual service imminently. I know it'll definitely need new rear pads & discs. I'm just wondering what else might need doing/checking as it's 8 and a half years old?

It's just shy of 60k miles at 59,500 and as said is a 2006 56' plate. My main thought is the cambelt and water pump...looking at my SH...

So Aug 2010, coming up for 5 years ago now and 49k miles. What do we think, how much life is possibly left?!

Am in exactly the same boat! 56 plate petrol vrs and I need ca belt, water pump, thermostat and was thinking of getting the cam follower changed whilst at it....not looking forward to the bill

Have you guys already had your cambelt done once like me too? Mine was a Guernsey car so had only done 10.5k miles in 4 years! But the first owner still got it done. I'm just wondering if 4 and a half years and 49k miles later is a bit hasty and unnecessary...?!

I'm pretty sure the bill for a cambelt water pump change is circa £400... :-/

If you plan on keeping the car a while yet then I'd get it done.

 

If you're going to move it on relatively soon it might be worth taking a chance. Depends on your appetite for risk.

These are dealer prices so worst case scenario but good for a gauge...

 

Cambelt - £359

 

Cambelt + waterpump - £459

 

You said you need rear discs and pads? £249...

Or, go for a major service @ £259, but make sure the air and fuel filters and plugs are due to be replaced or they won't do it but still charge you £259!

£459 is a bit steep, it's the 2nd time the belt and pump have been changed, car only done 40,000 on this belt but don't want to risk expensive damage by not doing it, I know a lad who changed the belt only on a golf and had a pump seize 15 months later, going to hunt around for an independent garage to do it.

Pump was only another £35 when I had it done by an indy. No extra labour

Hey guys thanks for the responses, much appreciated.

I've phoned Lion Garage (VAG Indy) in Loughborough and they advised probably best to get cambelt and water pump done as it's been 4 and a half years and I'm doing 50 miles a day to work, also car is mapped but ultimately my decision. They quoted me £350 all in for the cambelt and water pump which I thought was pretty good.

Also quoted £160 for rear discs & pads and then either £240 for a big service or £160 for the smaller one. Can't remember which one I need but think I'm gunna go for it as going to keep the car for years to come hopefully.

Still that's possibly a £670 bill minimum, not including this Cam Follower for HPFP and also need the rear washer jet replacing, hopefully nothing else...! Oh well, there goes the plans for getting those illusive black Neptune alloys I've been hankering after for aaaaaaages!!

If the rear jet is just blocked you just need to lift up the base of the wiper and it pops off. No tools needed.

 

4yr service is a biggy.

 

But my wife's 1 series got an inspection report from BMW recommending £3500 worth of work, none of it service related. Car has only done 35k in 5yr.

Those prices seem reasonable, especially when compared to the main dealer prices above.

 

Just make sure you find out what the differences are between the £160 and £240 services.

 

What is involved with each? The options are:

 

Oil and oil filter

Air filter

Fuel filter

Pollen Filter

Spark plugs

Brake fluid

 

There really is nothing else!

Yer I thought so to, pretty impressed with pricing and I had good service from them last year and good reviews on the web. Yes I'll be sure to find out what service I need, thanks for the rundown; I'm hoping for the cheaper one...! Cheers buddy

Just had a price from a local vag indy, £300 for belt, pump, tensioners and g12 coolant, also does major service with genuine parts for £180, think I've found my new garage.

Had the timing belt and water pump done yesterday at the garage mentioned in my last post, over the moon with the service and price, when I dropped it off I asked how much a new diverter valve would be as the car is on 92000 miles now and has been remapped in the last 6 months, he said he would fit a new one and only charge for the part (£33).

 

So all in for belt kit, water pump and diverter valve it was £333, I asked how the old belt and pump looked and he had them on a tray in the garage for me to see, they still looked in good condition, although they were 4 years old they only had 39000 miles on them, I will be back later in the year for a full service £180 including genuine parts.

That is cheap! Best price I can get to in reading is £400 for cam belt, water pump, thermostat and coolant, I think this is a very good price and am more than happy but £333....wow lol
