High Miler 1.9 TDi (PD) essential maintenance and

Featured Replies

I just bought a 160k octavia and want to start my own service routine. The engine seems really strong, I'd like to keep it this way, it has a full service history but I think from this stage on I would like to do my own service. Where should I start? I would ideally like to flush the engine oil and change with fully synthetic. I was thinking of getting a cheap filter and oil for flushing (any oil recommendations appreciated) I am sceptical of fuel system cleaners but if there are any to use that could actually help I am happy to get them. I have a long run coming up (300 miles) would this be a suitable run to flush the engine?

I was hoping I could then change the oil and filter again for the good stuff when I get back. Other than the obvious air filter is there anything else I should be looking at on such a high mileage engine to keep it running well? Should I be looking at maintaining a shorter service routine? Thanks

I have found a few potential issues, there is a loud what I would describe as "drumming" noise from the rear at around 60-70mph, it seems to be coming from the boot area, its quite rhythmic and stays even with clutch depressed. Also a very slight misfire or hesitation every so often at constant speeds, it is very small and lasts less than a second so barely noticeable. Any advice on either of these would be appreciated. Thanks

I would skip the flush (do the next 2 changes closer if you wish 3-6K?)   as long as it's "PD compliant"   and a good make and filter I would leave it  alone   fuel filter and air filter more often than the book @10-20K  a gearbox oil change may be a good idea if you can navigate VAG's number system (see elsewhere)    all fairly straight forward--sure there will be another opinion along soon --like buses

Cambelt and water pumps at the required intervals too. I had a journey in a Mk1 Octavia taxi the other morning rocking 450,258 miles

Thanks guys, I know if properly looked after these engines can go for miles and I have to say its an incredibly comfortable car considering its done 160k. I have some receipts from 2013 for a "clutch kit" of £800+, do you think that would have included the flywheel. The owner thinks it did. Also have a £1000+  2014 receipt for a turbo and everything else including receipts for all the work done over the years at the same garage that MOT'd it and all the receipts match any failures on the day. Hoping this is a good sign.
