Twin charger whoosh

Featured Replies

Hi all, new owner of a mk2 VRS here.

How much "whoosh" noise should I expect from the super- and turbochargers?

If I floor the throttle, it's pretty noticeable at low revs when the supercharger kicks in.

No noticeable power loss though, the thing pulls like a train. So, is it just normal behaviour for the twin charger?

I'm used to driving a mk1, where whoosh = boost leak

Thanks

yeah there is a nice whine from the supercharger at low revs, it cuts out the moment the turbo is up to speed though, its just to give instant torque.... on and off light throttle you can also hear the blow off vlave (if you have the window open!)

look at the torque spike caused by the supercharget right from the word go!....

I believe the dip is the changeover.... (3,000 revs, I may have had a wheel slip on the rollers at 4,000 revs!lol)

Cheers!

If you do not experience power loss or really crap mpgs then simply enjoy the soundtrack - don't look for problems, they will find you without your help all right.

you should hear a mid pitch whine from the SC and quickly joined by a smooth shrill whistle from the turbo.

Any whoooshing or hissing is not normal. If the bearings of the turbo are shot then the shaft play allows the tips of the compressor turbine to touch the housing and become slightly dmaged. This alters the whistle noise to whoooo noise Sounds like an owl

If either compressor or the turbine blades touch anything at all then you end up with a piece of a modern sculpture - at 125k rpm there is no other outcome :)

If there's a small hole on the compressed side of the air delivery system, especially rubber hoses, then you will hear the whoosh at high load where the pressure in the system is maxed. With bigger holes car would go into limp mode and dash lights up.

The "owl" you are referring to is bearings indeed.

You can hear the blow off valve if you accelerate then lift off the throttle with the window open. Shouldn't necessarily be hearing a whoosh under full acceleration tho.
