Canton and iTunes Plus (256kbs cd rip) - Good Enough?

Featured Replies

Odd question I know! Just looking at my itunes collection here and I have quite a few ripped CDs here.

I defaulted with a 256kb VBR bitrate AAC format. Do the resident audiophiles with Canton reckon there's is enough quality in the files or would I be better off ripping in a lossless format?

Lossless is great - but is there a need to re rip my collection?

Thanks in advance..! :)

As everyone has differing levels of acceptability and views on what sounds good or good enough Id say you're best off just trying it yourself. Imo Id only use lossless after lots of listening 'sessions' with the Canton system. Spotify downloads set to 'extreme' quality were noticeably better than when set to 'high' on some tracks also. Common sense but the higher the quality of the source, the better its going to sound. Canton doesn't do well with low quality/highly compressed audio.

Will the Columbus/Amundsen in the O3  even play AAC files from SD card, I don't think they can. The files need to be MP3 or unprotected WMA.

WMA, ASF, AAC and MP3 listed as supported in Amundsen manual. Even my current O2 Amundsen+ does AAC.

In my opinion with background noise etc I doubt going above 256kbps is worth it in a car, however good the sound system. It's hardly has a valve amp does it either!

My experience about MP3 files played on my Amundsen + Canton: you need the 320 kbps.

Music with lower bitrate sounds awful. I can hear the difference between 256 / 320 kbps top.

MP3 with lower than 256 kbps is unenjoyable for me.

My girlfriend's RCD-510 (in her Scirocco) plays 256 kbps MP3s nicer than my config which is interesting...

You do have to remember that an AAC file sounds a lot nicer than an mp3 with the same bitrate.

Possibly the poorer quality speakers are masking the poorer quality files, the canton highlights poor quality files because it has a better dynamic range and frequency response.

I'm going to have to give this a shot when the car arrives. I'm back to buying good old fashioned CDs since ordering the car - and have only noticed now how difficult it is to find them!!

I used to always use play.com and cdwow.ie for music back in the day but now that play no longer does direct sales and cdwow has gone the way of the dodo there only appears to be amazon..!

Anyone have any suggestions for sites to buy CDs? It's clearly the best way to buy music until someone starts selling lossless downloads.

You need to have a chat with Neil Young
