Blue smoke on take off!

Featured Replies

Hi I've recently purchased a superb DSG 170 on a 2009. No problems upto yesterday. Today I noticed when I put my foot fully to floor at a roundabout to pull out I got a puff of blue smoke. Whilst driving no smoke visible even when I drop it into sports and full throttle it, it only happens when the cars stood still and I set off with full foot to floor. Is this normal? Btw I'm new in here so hi!

They all blow a bit of smoke, keep an eye on consumption but I wouldn't worry

Isn't it normally black smoke that's normal with diesels. Doesn't blue smoke mean oil burning?

Black smoke on diesels means as I understand it poor injectors and quite dirty air filters otherwise known as crap service plan. :D

Another thing thats bothering me is a humming/droning noise which I notice at speeds above 30 mph. It seems to be coming from the front n/s. Read plenty of posts on here about this. Some say it's a wheel bearing and some say it's the DSG bearings? Any help welcome

It could also be uneven tyre wear, or 'sawtooth' as its sometimes called. It does sound like a wheel bearing has gone and can be quite pronounced on usually quiet smooth roads. Run your hand carefully around the tyres to see if one or more is wearing unevenly.

I had this on a previous Passat and currently have it on my Superb as well - new tyres will soon be fitted and quietness will resume.

The smoke is likely to be two things or a possible third,

1 - Turbo is on it's way, does happen it ppl full throttle it too much, and especially when cold or they turn the engine off after doing 4000prm due to carbonising in the turbo of the oil

2 - Valve stem oil seals, this one is probably the most likely tbh

3 - Not sure if the Skoda engine is the same as the VW ones but VW's had a tandem pump which once broken would allow engine oil into the fuel circuit

You should check her on idle for white acrid smelling smoke also, this one will say the turbo is done for,

It could also be if yours is a non dpf, unlikely as it's a 170 you would get a blast of carbons from takeoff anyway, I used to have to full throttle mine 3 or 4 times before the residual junk had been pressed out of the exhaust so it would pass emissions testing for the mot

Nearly forgot the tyre issue, jack the wheel and spin it as see if you hear anything more than normal rotation, these cars are noisy on the rubber anyway, pretty well all FWD cars are and cheap tyres make it worse, if it sounds like you are constantly driving over a motorway rumble strip look further than the tyres, if not wait until you need some new ones and see if anything has changed, buy a different brand as well.

cThere have been quite a few reports lately of uneven tyre wear on the rear wheels on the Superb. As the tyres wear (unevenly) the noise or droning gets worse.

When the tyre fitter removed my rear tyres (the droning was at this point extremely noticeable) he was shocked at the uneven wear - often referred to as saw toothing.

Fresh tyres cured it completely.

There should be no black smoke at all, the CR170 is fitted with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), if it is blue then this suggests unburnt oil.

Thankyou for all your replies. Firstly with the uneven tyre wear on the rear tyres. I've just had the car through mot surely they would have mentioned this. Also the humming/droning noise is coming from the front end. Plus the tyres are only 2 months old, the previous owner had these put on just before selling the car. Could the droning be a DSG issue? Read bad reviews about the 7 speed but not the 6 speed.

If the tyres are only two months old then this rules out the rear tyres.

If the noise is coming from the front what are the front tyres looking like?

If you can rule out the tryes I'd be looking at wheel bearings or the transmission.

Does the droning match the engine RPM, i.e. gets louder / more noticeable with higher engine speeds?

Yes it gets louder and louder. The car has full history but book doesn't say when DSG was serviced last. When I accelerate you can hear it a little but as soon as I let go of the gas that's when it's noticeable.

I thought it said black smoke (blush).

Sounds like valve seals , turbos tend to start whistling

No turbo whistle that I've noticed. Recently had a new turbo actuator.

What symptoms did the actuator fault give
