Mk1 Octavia VRS couple of codes, help please

Featured Replies

Hi, ran a full code scan today and these little beauties popped up, should I be worried?  How can they be rectified?

Climatronic seems ok, although I was wondering why it was quietly chirping like a bird occasionally.

Thanks in advance

The V71 is a common one, sometimes caused by the motor becoming unsynced. There is an output test in VCDS for the climatronic system that resyncs the motors and sometimes cures this.

It is one of those things, that will either cure it, or you are going to have to decide if you want to bite the bullet and change the motor - not an easy or pleasant job.

The other could be an old code from either a low battery or fusebox issue. Clear them down and see what returns.

What VCDS version have you got, full or lite?.

Cheers guys sorry for late reply forgot I'd posted up! It's vcds lite I've got, I'll try reset the motor. I did disconnect the battery to clear the tc light after trying the car without maf, so probably that. Thanks again I'll take a look at the climatronic, as you say fingers crossed I'll get lucky.

With VCDS, you can only run output tests and basic settings with either a registered version of VCDS Lite, or the full version, the basic VCDS Lite will only allow checks - see here for more info. http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/vag-functions.html

Don't want to speak tooooooooooo soon, but reset it through basic settings and on half hour drive just now it wasn't chirping like a bird, and I didn't hear that ticking behind the dash.  Frankly the ticking could be any of the relays, god knows which, but I felt like it was associated with the climatronic, anyway, seems sound.  I've not dared self diagnose the system yet, I didn't want to be disappointed by 4FA reappearing, I'll just enjoy the quieter heating for now...may well reemerge but fingers crossed.  It was all working fine anyway, just that weird noise and the fault code.

Knackers it chirped on the way home again, not as bad but it's starting to annoy me now. How tricky a job is it?

This may help to get an idea - http://workshop-manuals.com/skoda/octavia-mk1/heating_air_conditioning/heating_air_conditioning/air_conditioner/climatronic_air_conditioner_with_automatic_regulation%29/replacing_the_air_conditioning_control_motors/removing_and_installing_the__control_motor_of_air_flow_flap_v71/

Although to be honest, it is not as easy as the manual would have you believe. just out of interest, you don't think you might have a leaf stuck in the flap do you?.

I was thinking that, it is a strange noise, usually this motor problems are associated with a clicking as the gearing fails to engage aren't they? The noise runs when normal heating is on, I've not even pressed recirc. Strange that a leaf or similar would throw a code, could that be because it's stopping it opening and/or closing completely?

Normally they click yes, but as you are getting an odd noise and the code, it may be worth a good look round the vents. It is a shame you don't know someone with an endoscope, as you could feed it in a vent and see what's in there - if anything.

Yeah I think I'd rather put up with the noise than pull the whole dash off. I may see if I can get the glove box off to explore that end, seems to be where the noise is coming from. Can I just get the vents themselves out, won't be able to explore too far in but could have a poke about.

I remember about 18 months ago, there was a post on here, and the person managed to fish the leaf out of the box, but I can't remember who it was for the life of me. It may be worth a search in the Octy 1 section to see what comes back.

I have only ever changed the motor, and to be honest won't be doing any more any time soon as I enjoyed it so much, so I can't be much help on this I'm afraid.

I had that fault for years. Had the scratching noise constantly. In the end I disconnected the cable to the recirc flap and moved it so it was always on fresh air.

There's a thread on here with pics of my arms ripped to shreads after I finished.

Ah........................ I remember the cut arms when I did mine, when I was finished, SWMBO thought I'd started self harming big style. :giggle:

Not for the faint hearted then. I've seen endoscopes on ebay quite reasonable, might give that a shot before I lose my fingers.

Did the noise cease? Was it like a high pitched fluttering? It does sound like a leaf trapped in rhythm, but in tone sounds more mechanical if you know what I mean?
