Gearbox noise in every gear :(

Featured Replies

Anyone got any ideas what this grinding noise is? Only happens under load. Sounds hell of a lot worse when in the car.

People have said its thrust bearing and also a knackered diff. Anyone got any more advice? If it is the box should i be expecting loads of metal fillings in the box?

Check condition of gbox oil. See if it smells like burning smell see if any bits come out

I would get it looked at asap and try not to use it.

Where are you making the recording, inside / outside car ??

Besides roaring, sounds like a toffee sweet wrapper being unfurled..?

inside, its really quite for some reason but if you listen carefully between gear changes the noise goes.

So clutch pedal depressed, sound goes?

Clutch release bearing my first thought, and not a gear-box problem, I'm guessing..

The noise also disappears when not reving.

If not in gear and not moving and revving the engine, the sound disappears, still tells me it's the clutch release bearing.

As the gear-box synchromesh cogs are not engaged, and not turning kinda eliminates gear-box problem.

The first motion shaft ( the bit of the gear-box shaft) that sticks into the flywheel centre, could and I say candidly could, have a noisy bearing?

Suggestion take it along to a garage and get a professional opinion, and demonstrate on their forecourt exactly what you are hearing.

Good luck.
