Brakes.... What to do?

Featured Replies

Car is in for service today and they are fobbing me off saying I need discs and pads all round, I know that they are fine but I thought this would be a good excuse for looking at an upgrade.

I'm open minded to better discs and pads of OEM size or even big brake kit. It's a case of weighing up the options.

My intention is for road use and a few track days every year.

Will yellow stuff pads, better fluid and new discs do the job?

What are the options for big brake kits? Preferably new rather than those off another car.

Thanks

Well I'm upgrading to 312mm front and 256mm rear front are mk1 TT but mk1 Octavia vrs will work too and rear are mk1octavia vrs

Just one question are your front discs 256 or 288? Much easier if 288

Fronts are 288

I have standard discs... yellow stuff pads improved things massively, but I was still loosing the pedal at blyton last year, a fluid upgrade to ATE blue did the trick, they now work very well :) I'm happy with them at the moment, affordable and effective...

I may go bigger when I start on the engine, but for now this setup work fine for me.

there are better pads than yellowstuff, but as far as I know the well liked "better" ones, such as tarox corsa's are twice the price, and not approved for road use. (yellowstuff are)

Fronts are 288

Mk1 tt and octy vrs mk1 are a straight bolt on so

Yeah I'm considering yellow stuff pads and fluid change to begin with, where's the best place to buy ATE super blue and how much of it do I need?

Would I see additional benefit from drilled/grooved discs?

Where's the best place to source the callipers, carriers etc? Does anyone sell refurb ones?

I got mine from ebay, a litre is enough if you are just bleeding through each brake, the blue colour helps you know when its done ;) I had a bit left over, but havent needed to top up.

personally I dont think grooved or drilled discs make any difference.....

due to the massive temps created on track, I have considered looking at a bit of a home made cold air feed though....

I'm in Southern Ireland got my front calipers from local motor factors and carriers from ebay, rears where sourced from a breakers yard. My pads and discs all round are Delphi, ate super blue on my list too

Just checked it out, they look beast... definitely worth considering if a set come up at the right price. Were they a straight fit with Gigaros?

yes a straight swap. But the disc ain't cheap to replace as there a 2 piece floating disc.

iam upgrading to a 6 pot 330mm kit atm with fluid and pads , not cheap but i needed new discs and pads all around anyway.

also the oem kit did catch fire on my last downhill ride with friends .

My all new around Ferodo discs fitted 8 days ago are corroding away nicely allready around the outer edges and centres, such is life life and winter salted road.

I can get a set of 334mm R32 fronts with refurbed calipers, new pads and decent discs for £325 delivered.

What to do.... How many hours labour do we reckon to fit?

An hour each side really,  but allow 3 hours,

You will be getting Braided Hoses i hope, and you will be changing the fluid, and make sure the ABS Pump does not go dry.

so we are at 4 hours to do it all properly.

Basically how long is a piece of string, but the brakes upgraded is not an epic thing.

What about the rears, are they getting done?

That's true, I suppose it's a case of how much care and attention one wants to take with fitting.

The rears will also get getting done as soon as I source the parts.

bloody hell that is very cheap. Make sure they are 334mm and not the 345mm ones.

I did mine in the drive and took no more than 2 hrs to do

Yeah definitely the 334's, I'm hoping the guy can hold them for a couple of days and then they're mine :)

I know in theory it's an easy job, I'm a technically minded type that doesn't have the confidence to pick up the tools and do it myself, especially something like brakes. :)
