Where to start - what do I need?

Featured Replies

After having issues with my dealer washing and scratching my car: http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/345451-absolutely-flaming-livid/

I am seriously considering having a go at correcting the damage myself.

Could someone advise me on what equipment I need, with recommended products, pads etc? Preferably a machine that I cannot mess up with.

There are no deep marks, just light swirls and scratches.

Also, is there is a beginners guide to paint correction anywhere on this site?

Thanks

Paul

I would start with a basic Dual Action Polisher..They are fairly safe

You will need to read up in a 'How to guide' ......Heres one I posted:

Here

You will need 2 grades of polishing pad (Medium and Finishing)

Polish is harder, but a good one is Sonax 04-06 from 'Clean your Car'

Buy here:

Good luck

Thanks Chris, I've started reading it.

I may be back when I have started!

All the best

Youre welcome Paul

If you ring and talk to the guys at CYC, they will advise on which equipment and polish/pads to buy..They know their stuff!!

Use the finishing Pad with the DA and Carlack68 + buff off...then apply wax on top for extra protection...by hand

Do I buff off the carlack by hand as it was a pita last time I used it

Does the wax have to be a hand job too? Was hoping to avoid that!

Thanks Chris

Yes..by hand

Could you not use a liquid wax and apply with DA at low speed?

You can. Yes

But I think Wax is best applied by hand

is it the actual application you dont like?  if so maybe a different applicator type might help

application is fine, just removal that can be a pain.

Buffing shouldn't be too hard really mate, maybe you could experiment with time left on the paint before buffing, or maybe you are using a little too much product. What product is it and how long are you leaving it on for?

I would agree too, that hes possibly applying too much Carlack68, because in my experience with it, its very easy to buff off

just remembered I bought some hellshine not long ago and used it once, cant say i noticed any difference or it lasted long.

what is the ideal way to use this? Is it a last stage like a wax, or would a quality wax such a bilt hamber (recommended to me by a paint correction specialist) be better.

I have accumulated many products over the last year, but not sure if I have really got the best out of them.

I thought carlack shampoo, paint cleaner and acrylic sealant combo would protect the paint from bird lime, which has left some etching on the bonnet.

On my previous superb, which had a couple of coats of FK1000p, there was not such etching, and as this was a company car, I was not as OCD as I am now.

Thanks

Hellshine Abyss is a sealant and very durable

Do you have the Wax container version, or the spray bottle?

It must be applied very sparingly via a sponge or MF appliator pad

It needs to cure then for 20 or 30 minutes before being buffed off

If applied to a prepared and decontaminated paint surface, it should easily last 6 months

If you apply straight over an existing product, it will fail quickly

Secondly...there are not many products, with the possible exception of Ceramic Sealants that will protect your car from bird droppings

They must be wiped off asap or the acids, they contain, will eat through your LSP and then your clearcoat; if you leave it on long enough
