Octavia VRS TDI - Rate my setup please

Featured Replies

Hey all

I have myself an Octy TDI VRS CR and I'm not sure if my current setup is good/bad or ugly (joke in there somewhere). Here are the tyres as follows:

Fronts

Horace Headway

225/40R18 92 W

Nearside Rear

Conti Sport Contact 2

225/40R18 92 Y

Offside Rear

Goodyear Efficient Grip Performance

225/40R18 92 W

The fronts were fitted at the dealership prior to pickup as the current MOT advisory stated the previous tyres were too close to the legal limit. The rears are as is. I've done a bit of research and get the impression the Headways (HU901s) are very budget tyres and due to their price, have been fitted for convenience. I don't get the Goodyear/Conti system at the rear so don't know what to think of this.

Ideally, I would like a setup where I can run 'all season' tyres. Due to storage reasons and not to mention finances, a winter/summer combo is not feasible.

It's worth mentioning when it comes to tyres, I've little knowledge. So, I'm after some much needed advice about my current setup and what you would do if in my situation. Cheers.

Get rid of the Horace Ditchways ASAP!! The other 2 are decent tyres but I'd prefer to see the brand at least matched side to side.

As said above its nice to have at least the sides matching.  It bugs me enough if my fronts are different to the rears.  Sounds obvious but not all tyres behave in the same way and wear at different rates, which is further complicated by how wear on different sides is effected by camber, roundabouts etc.  If I was you, I'd save some pennies and get new all round, or, just get a new front pair for now, gather some more pennies, get new matching pair for rear but swap them back to front if there's a few months between purchases.  You've one great tyre on there, the good year, they'd be great all round, had those on my toledo v5, very good.  Depends on your budget really, the ratings are very useful so pay attention to those when looking around, go on mytyres.co.uk and you'll see just about anything you can get for your money pop up.

Provided they have plenty of tread left, get a matching conti and Goodyear to go with what you have. Then you'll have a matching pair per axle. Ditch the budgets.

There's nothing worse than cheap tyres.

Cheers for the replies guys. Been doing a bit of shopping round and I'm either considering the Goodyear extra grip Performances or the F1 AS 2's. Was talking to a colleague at work who said the current tyre to go for is the Dunlop Maxx Sport RT but I beg to differ. Anyone any experience with these?

I've never had those Dunlops, but any I have had have had a high wear rate, poor wet grip and poor aquaplane resistance.
