claymitt - how to?

Featured Replies

As the title really, got myself a clay mitt, so is it: wash, run over with de-iron/tar then 2BM with clean water/shampoo and claymitt

also, wonder wheels hot wheels, is it safe to use on paint as you can ironx?

Yes to all....Wash off the Wonder wheels and tar remover with the hose pipe or P Washer before you use the 2BM

I use the shampoo mitt/Pad to lubricate for the Clay Mitt...a hand each (Left hand the wash pad..right hand the Clay mitt)

As you use it. it will start rough sounding and then go quiet..Its really good and sort of cool to use

Ahh right, I was thinking you washed it 2bm then basically do the same again with the mitt.

Cheers Chris.

Deiron or retar first? Or does it not matter? My detar is bilt hamber paint clenser

please don't use wonder wheels on your paint.

I disagree ...Its fine..Used it since it first came out...and only £4 at Morrisons

Its not the acidic version ...its WW 'Hot Wheels'..The iron out version..like Iron X

Its OK to use on paintwork...just like IronX is OK too

Doesn't remove that much fall out though so IMO its pointless.

Try it on a car and then go back over it with a dedicated iron remover. You will see there will still be a lot of contamination left.

IMO it doesn't...so not pointless at all

Ive used it extensively, as said

So we will have to disagree

As said, just my opinion.

We are both happy with our methods and that's that.

Does the claymitt leave a marring effect?

Can do , you need to polish after claying

Occasionally I can get a fish scale style marring after using clay mitt. It's no bother though as vanishes instantly after a bit of machine polishing. I think it's just the effort of rubbing the mitt over the freshly cleaned up paint which can do this. My mitt might also be at end of life. Have a new one to use on next car that comes to me.

As Jason says..Yes..It can do

I always polish after using it, so never a problem

Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but if you are going to polish the paintwork, what do you gain by claying first?   I'm confused.  I'd have thought the polish would remove any contamination along with the oxidised paint all in one step.

Its always best to remove the contaminents or they can be dragged over the paintwork by the polishing process

I see, I think, thanks

Sorry to be thick but .

I bought what can only be described as a microfibre towel with clay on one side I would have washed the car then dried it then using a lube clayed the car . Are you saying that I could clay the car as I wash it.

Cheers

Not really. The car needs to be washed before hand so you are not dragging dirt  all over the paint with your clay towel.

You can use shampoo and water as clay lube though.

I use shampoo and water with the clay cloths , and wash the car off again after claying

Just to avoid confusion:

Wash the car as normal

Apply deciontamination products if needed (Detar/Iron out products)

Rinse off

Clay with soapy water or a clay lubricant/QD product

Rinse

Dry

Polish

Wax/Seal

Cheers

If you don't have the time, or the car doesn't seem too bad, can you skip the clay and polish?  so

Wash the car as normal

Apply deciontamination products if needed (Detar/Iron out products)

Rinse off

Dry

Wax/Seal

I presume so?

also I'm of an era where the 'dry' was done with a chamois leather, but I get the impression a MF towel is preferred these days, are chamois bad?  or MF towels easier to use?

BTW, my octy is only 9 months old and paint reasonable (not perfect, but I'm not fussed enough to go near it with clay and polish yet....time and a bit scared of over doing it I guess).

So far it gets a 2BM wash and I've got myself a MF noodle mitt for that now (picked one up for a pound in  the local 1 pound store).  It gets gets a hand rinse and chamois and 3 times now its had sealant with AG EGP which I find has given some very impressive beads and lasted 4 to 5 months at least.

The car is garaged when not in use so i guess well protected from a lot of 'fallout' acid rain and UV, so I hope...suspect (laziness comes in here too) that it won't get a clay and polish for another year or more.  However I'm wondering if it might be worth getting some Iron X and giving that a go before I next apply  the sealant.  That will probably be July or August tme as I've only just done a coat of it.

Bilt hamber auto wheels has decent reviews and cheaper than ironx, but not as cheap as hot wheels
