noisey gearbox/diff ?

Featured Replies

Hi all would really appriciate a bit of help,i have a noise i thought was the inner cv joint which i have replaced with a new one, when it was off i was turning the diff and it sounds all dry and clunky. The noise increases with speed and as you slow down so does the clattering it does it in drive or iv your coasting.

Its a 08 octavia 1.9tdi 5 speed with 200,000 miles the dual mass is in need of doing could it be anything to do with that.I have put 120,000 miles on it and i have serviced it but i have never done the gearbox oil would that calm it down maybe. Many thanks

Ever changed gearbox oil

Lol

I changed the oil on the missus motor in the gear box, horrible black tarry crud came out, definatley quiter and smoother with fresh oil, give it ago may help you.

It could also be the DMF as you mention.

As you rotate the wheel it will turn the gearbox and the DMF. If the DMF is knackered then you will hear it moving around.

An SMF is widely fitted to the 1.9 Octavia and comes with great praise.

Phil

If you can hear a distinct rattle on tick over, loudest from the rear of the nsf wheel, I would say dmf.

A mechanic diagnosed this on mine straight away from the noise only.

A Dmf was fitted (with new bolts) and no problems since.

As Phil mentions, many have replaced with a Smf, with great results I believe.

You have to give us a chance to reply, maybe just give the thread a polite Bump instead.

Hi peeps thanks for the replys,I think it's the diff because I've jacked the car up removed both inner cv joints and turned the diff and it sound dry and worn.would it be worth changing the oil before I remove the gearbox, again thanks for the replys

I would do the oil first and go from there.

i reckon the oil should be changed every 60,000miles so yes, that would be a good starting point.

Olease update us with the results / findings.

Well, oil changed and no difference only 3/4 of a litre came out.I put the 1.9 litres back in got it from main dealer,so I think the box is coming out the weekend and get the diff repaired,so I will keep you updated chaps

damage probably done due to low oil?  Maybe some bearings have died?
