Which machine polisher?

Featured Replies

Could anyone recommend a machine polisher? Not looking to spend too much, my aim is to try and improve the paintwork on my MR2, it's solid black and has quite a few small scratches and swirls.

Any pointers in the right direction much appreciated, are the Silverline ones on Amazon any good? The reviews seem ok on there.

I have a Silverline Silverstorm. It's a heavy machine. Do you have any experience with a rotary?

No, never used one. I was going to try to sort the paintwork by hand but after mentioning this to the guy that refurbed my wheels his advice was that a mop would make a much better job of it.

Thanks Chris, will read up on it..

It's worth it.  I just bought the "pro plus" version of it, and it's a versatile tool even for someone like me who uses it for me that just his own car.

Although still possible to do damage, it's a lot tougher to make mistakes with a DA than a rotary.  I cut my teeth doing full polishing using just a basic DAS6, several years ago.

The tool will not affect the way you approach different types of paint - The pad and polish choice is key. :)

You could still buy the first kit Chris links to but just use the Final finish polish and the polishing pad / finishing pad, skipping any use of the compounding pad and power finish.  You could save that combo for your Octy which would benefit from it, being a fair bit tougher.

It's the same machine in both links but the second one comes with different compounds / pads so thought it might be more suited. The paintwork is not great so I think it will need quite a lot of work to bring it up. No longer own the Octy :-(

You have a lot to learn my apprentice :D

The megs 105 compound is essentially the same as the menzerna power finish in the first link,.

and the orange pad I think is the same type of cutting pad as the cutting pad in the first link.

I would personally go with the Menzerna link, but that's just me.  Ultimately both are really offering the same thing.  2 choices of pad, (although first link has 3) and 2 choices of tough and lighter polishes. :)

I was just going by what Chris said about my MR2 having soft paint but the description in the link he gave me said it was more suited to hard paint. I guess they all will give similar results but want to make sure I'm buying the right stuff!

No worries - I can see how you'd see that, but megs 105 is about the toughest, hardest cutting compound polish you can buy I think - at least not without resorting to something like a gritty paste rather than a liquid polish. :)

Cheers, do you rate the Menzerner stuff better than the Meguiars then? My car is solid black and has lots of marks..

I learned on the menzerna stuff.  It's decent for sure.

But now I chop and choose my polishes as I see fit.  I have stuff from Meguiars, Menzerna, 3M, Autoglym (yep even them) and also G3 stuff.

Thanks Chris, will have a read of that link when I get time later.

My main objective is to remove as many scratches and swirls as possible rather than a showroom shine, which polish / pad combo would you use?

Get a medium pad and a finishing pad with Scholl S30

Start with the finishing pad..if its not doing anything..up the grade to the Medium one

BUT..You must read up how to polish first

Good luck

Great work

What pad / polish combo did you go for?

Cheers! A combination of Megs 105/205 , Black hole and the worst bits were taken out with G3 scratch remover.
