Sorry another remap vs box thread

Featured Replies

For some time I have been contemplating get my cars tuned. One is a yeti the other a Hyundai Santa Fe.

After much research I have found that there are a number of boxes and remaps available. Problem is it's so very hard to cut through the sludge and get to understand the risks of either.

I would like a switchable option, which up to recicently required an ecu open and superchips bluefin but wasn't keen on them after a 10min chat. I know see that BSR (Sweden) suggest that an obd switchable map is possible as does superchips, but as stated superchips didnt feel me with trust and BSR are an unknown in the uk. So wait a bit longer and the yeti is sorted with a ecu map.

The Santa fe is much much less mainstream and no obd switchable option is never likely so it's either risk having the ecu map or fit a box.

This leads me to look at how each work, this is where I started to loose my way. You get a lot of there x is rubbish mine is better, boxes are rubbish, ecu remaps are best etc....

Well there is 3 boxes that I know of.

1-box that changes injection duration

2-box that changes rail pressure

3-box that changes rail pressure and boost control

Then of course there's remaps...

So I understand that a box that does rail pressure (with or with out boost control) will put a higher load on the high pressure file pump and I know that for a rotary component only a small load increase can have a large impact on fatigue life. But this will also most likely give a better mix thus better mpg along with increased power, possibly lower egt but maybe higher peak cylinder pressures?

The other box that does duration will not put extra load on the pump, but will most likely be less efficient as the extra fuel will be added late in the injection cycle thus will not burn as well so could also add to higher egt and maybe even dpf issues.

Remaps... This is a little unknown at least with the other you know what your buying and what has been changes to achieve those figures. Ie a box either plugs into the rail or each injector. With a remap you have no way of knowing.... And thus understanding the risk are harder.

But which is the best way??? That's the real question. Rail pressure or injection duration? And how can you select a ecu remap that does want you want.

Please correct me if any of this is wrong and also add in your views...

Thanks,
