Help/Advice needed....locking wheel nut

Recommended Posts

Hi there. My locking wheel nut has gone amiss from my toolkit . I reckon it must have been....misplaced...the last time it went in for a tyre to be fitted so unbeknown to me ive been driving it around for a while with no locky. It's fitted with 15 inch helios alloys which were standard and is an 06 plate octavia estate. Can anyone advise me what type to get....Ive looked on the internet and they seem to be easy enough to come by but there are all different splines sizes etc...phoned my local dealer and they will charge £40 to look at the car and try all different sizes and then £30 for whatever one it is....does this seem reasonable...I've takem a pic if required but would need to figure out how to attach it. ...your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If they were OEM the dealer should be able to look up the key from your VIN, maybe try another dealer?

If all else fails if they're the standard fit  they can be tapped and drilled out by most tyre fitters. they have drill bits with backwards screws.

If they're mcgards or something a bit more specialised you might have some trouble.

I'll try calling them back with the vin number but the parts guy said they have to charge 30 minutes labour to check out all the different master keys they have so have to charge 40 quid plus 30 for whatever one it turns out to be. I already gave them the reg number over the phone so not too hopeful...I think they're probably trying to max the money out me! Thanks for the reply.

The threads should be 1.5mm, check length, and thickness, suggest whip wheel bolt out and measure, alloys have a tapered shoulder which do vary, so also check this too.

For the time being, get a set of four bolts from the scrappy perhaps until your locking bolts are sourced ?

I'd buy a 14mm drill bit along with 4 standard wheel bolts, drill the locking nuts out and replace with the standard bolts. That'll cost about £20 in total.

I did this when one of my locking nuts got stripped, my thinking being no one steals 16 inch wheels these days.......especially off a Skoda.
