buying a vcds?

Featured Replies

So with the recent problems I've been having with airbag connectors I figured it may be worth buying a unit to see/clear faults myself, so my question is where do I buy one and how much are they :p?

About £250 - £270.  Both Ilexa and Gendan are approved stockists.

Wouldn't the £60 'lite' do the job on a Mk2 Fabia?

£60 sounds good if it can see / clear basic faults that i can rectify :)

'lite' meaning a lite version of the above suggested?

Yes. There's a feature list on the VCDS website somewhere. You'd need a 3rd party dongle as they don't sell one for the lite version any more. If you're only going to use it on an older car such as the Fabia you'll be fine.

The biggest pain with it is you can only move it from one PC/laptop to another ONCE. If your harddrive fails and you reinstall it on a new drive in the same PC/laptop, your old activation file will work and its not classed as your 'move'.

Hmm Ok so I could simply use my laptop then with the right cable \ dongle.

Where do I get the cable \ dongle :p ?

Scratch that still can't find a suitable dongle, help :(

Anyone? :(

You need a cable along the lines of the one below on eBay. Check first if it is compatible with your laptop's OS. Then download VCDS Lite from Ross-Tech's website and decide if you wish to pay to register it for extra functions.

OK so i went with the cabled version of the adapter, £6 from fleabay, downloaded vcds lite and plugged it all in, scanned the airbag module and found the following fault code:

VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.2
Saturday, 04 April 2015, 18:37:16.
Control Module Part Number: 1C0 909 605 K
  Component and/or Version: QN AIRBAG VW51 Q5   0011
           Software Coding: 20814
            Work Shop Code: WSC 13765
                      VCID: 2C2B87B3CF13
1 Fault Found:
00589 -  Airbag Igniter 1; Passenger Side (N131)
        32-10 -  Resistance too High - Intermittent

so basically speaking, the garage i took my car into to sort the fault originally were looking at the wrong side of the car :peek: .

looks like this might be a wiring issue, maybe the plugs! i hope so anyway.. :notme:  when i get some time.. hopefully before my MOT in may ill rip apart the pillars and have a looksie, fault has cleared for now. thanks alot for the help with finding the right kit

Cheers again

Which system would allow me to activate auto wipers if at all?

Does you car have a rain/light sensor? I don't recall seeing a car with the sensor that didn't have auto wipers.

It's the tour de france edition , it's got sensors in the windscreen but only intermitant wipers . It's got auto lights so the sensor could be for that

Odd, the sensor is a single combined unit as far as I know. Worth poking around with VCDS and see what happens.

You can download wiring diagrams from erWin if you need to.

been on the page but i cant seem to find a download, or do i have to register first?

Yes, you have to register first then pay for access, ie for 1 hr, 1 day or longer. This gives access to the full official workshop manual and more for your specific car.

Seriously expensive bit of kit.

-UPDATE-

Since cable tying the plug under the passenger seat and resetting the fault code nothing more as of yet! Fingers crossed!

Not much point paying for any more than an hour of ERWIN access - you can download all the PDFs in that time if you are quick. They don't expire and can be printed at will. I have them all on my phone, which makes for a great portable reference.

One word of advice - on the Superb at least, the Passat version of the engine manual has a couple of useful diagrams - such as coolant flow - which are not in the Superb version of the doc. So have a look in the "family" cars too.
