Almost a Superb owner!

Featured Replies

I’ve been in the Mk2 Octavia forum the last few years with my trusty 2010 1.6 CR. Recently I was looking to replace it with a vRS for some added schnell.

Clearly my expectations were too high because after a few months of searching it became apparent I would have have to compromise on price or on level of kit. Anyway, off I went to Grimsby last weekend to look at a vRS Blackline - I’m a sucker for a sporty look in Race Blue, or so I thought. While there I spied a Superb Estate 170 4x4 Elegance. All my homework was on the vRS, so I had to do some fast Briskoda/brochure reading to get up to speed. Coming from an S trim Octavia with 105 PS engine, I suppose it’s not hard to be impressed by a 170 PS Superb Elegance, some nice optional extras too. I was drawn in and one test drive and one hour later, the deal was done.

I collect on Saturday, but the week is reeeeeally dragging...

Im dropping down from a 150bhp Chevrolet Epica to 105bhp Superb, the Superb has only 150 miles on the clock (new 15 plate) and feels tight, that should change soon...

on the upside the display say 63mpg......

I couldn't stretch to a FL Superb in the spec I wanted, maybe next time. I do like the combination of the FL estate in white you have. Mine is apparently amethyst purple, which looks more like brown to me.

I must admit I wasn't hugely impressed with the 1.6 CR in the Octy, never managed great fuel economy out of it, sometimes saw 50 mpg, 55 once in a blue moon. I always wondered if the previous owner hadn't run it in properly or it had an undiagnosed issue. Then again, quite possibly my driving style in which case it wouldn't matter which engine I had!

I love that build up to getting a new car!

The Octy VRS is a very nice car (I have the 170 diesel) but I too am lusting after the bigger (and better equipped) Superb (V6 4x4). Good choice on the estate too... Much nicer design than the saloon.

Any pics?

I was after a Mk2/3 Octy VRS Estate (as I already have a Mk1 VRS) but after test driving a few, I took a MkII Superb Elegance out and was hooked. So much more car, I love mine.. just got my eye on the CR170 remap by Shark on the Group Buy at the mo! :)

A remapped Superb can be fun to drive, no-one around you ever expects the car to be more than a big slug & the same goes for ones passengers,

until the red mist descends ..................

Two tugs on the paddles  usually produces the desired results, if not just drop back into "S" & watch it scoot past the redline!

(Normally I drive like a proper OAP should, but the are times...........)

I hate the buying part because I'm rubbish at haggling, but now I'm itching to get back there. Estate vs. saloon is close for me, but the estate just edges it. Money no object, the V6 4x4 would be the best of both worlds for practicality and sleeper-factor.

I still have a slight moment when I see a Race Blue vRS like I did today, but there's enough going on with the Superb it should keep me happy. Only picture i have for now is the one I took before leaving

I plan to keep the car for a while, so I wouldn't rule out a remap later on to renew the relationship

This is my first 4x4 equipped car, DSG would have been nice too, but one box of tricks at a time I think!

Yes, perhaps more brown than purple, by my, what a pretty brown! Love the combi. Enjoy your new toy! :)

Is that chromed front lip an optional extra? I'm really not a chrome fan but that really suits the Superb. Gives it real presence.

that piece of chrome should be on all elegance models(pre FL). I had it on my last one and it wasn't extra. It does really set the car off

I like it, it seems to suit the colour I have. That said, I can appreciate it's not for everyone and you can replace some fo the trim pieces with those from Superskoda and the like, in black for example.

I'll have to buy a tube of autosol very soon!

After what felt like the longest week, I picked up the car at the weekend. It's my first 4x4/haldex equipped car, so no idea what to expect (goes unnoticed 99% of the time according to the dealer?). The drive back was plenty long enough to get acquainted and I made a point of taking one of the A roads over the Peak District as it was much more interesting to drive than the M62.

Ok, it’s not hard to be impressed with a Superb Elegance coming from a base spec Octavia without any factory options, but the kit level is certainly negating any misgivings I had about switching from Octavia to Superb. The wife never saw the car in the flesh until I brought it home, so her first (mocking) comment was “you’ve bought a barge”, her second comment was “crikey!” when she saw the front and rear legroom. It's true she can't reach back to wipe our kid's noses anymore, but neither do we have to tell them to get their feet off the back of our seats!

I wanted something that felt less laboured on the motorway or when overtaking on A roads; it's looking good so far, plenty of grunt but nice and refined. The summer will be the true test when we load up with the kids and a full boot to drive to Germany.

Little things I like, for example the doors feel much heavier, which means a nice definitive thunk when you shut them, or given I’m 5 years old at heart, the needle staging on the dash when you start up is really cool! Must admit I feel a bit poncy opening the electric tailgate by remote, it’s handy, but a bit embarrassing with the beeping.

Next: Give it decent clean - take some pictures - sort out a spare wheel/ditch the can of gunge - replace the knackered front/rear badges and centre caps.

The nose and feet comment is certainly true!

I'm sure that the beeps on the boot could probably be either switched off in MFD or disabled by someone with VCDS.

I can certainly vouch for ditching the gunk for a spare.

Yep, the beep can be turned off with VCDS & a couple of other tweaks too. Boot closing on the inside button & via remote...

Thanks for the info chaps, a search returned a thread from Gizmo describing just that. Good to know it doesn't affect the alarm chirp or parking sensors.
