Occasional clonk type noise when I brake hard - 2005 Fabia VRS - Help please!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm after some help, my car has been driving like clockwork (I do a 100 mile motorway round trip every day) with no issues until yesterday.

I was in traffic at the start of my journey home and had to brake hard from say 40mph to 10-15mph. The car slowed as normal with no pulling to either side but after an initial second or 2 of braking I got what I can only describe as a loud clonk noise from the front of the car which I felt it through the brake pedal and the noise / clonk disappeared as soon as it came. I had to brake reasonably hard a number of times on the way home (the joys of driving the M56!!) and there was no repeat incident until today where it did it once again.

After a visual check underneath the car when I got home there does not appear to be anything broken, bent, etc and I only had it serviced a few weeks ago by a reputable local garage and was told that my brakes were 50% worn so I would like to think that it's not the pads or discs themselves.

I have not hit any pot holes, kerbs or made contact with anything so am puzzled as to what this could be - any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Martin

I'd be inclined to check the consol bushes.  Look at the rear of each bush, from underneath looking forward.  The standard ones have voids in them and they tend to degrade over time.

Just wondering if it was just the abs working harder as yours brakes are half worn

Not sure. Has anyone else experienced this as I am surely not the only one with half worn brakes?

Not had this experience on my car but on gf clio. The abs ring had broke. I had to do an emergency stop. The abs cut in 2 or 3 times. And it made a similar clonk sound

If you felt it through the pedal.then could be this??

Could be worn mounts.

A quick update on this, just come back from the garage and a bolt had sheered off on the lower suspension arm hence the clonk when I braked hard. All is now sorted.
