Rust protection on hot metal parts

Featured Replies

Rust... (sigh)

The entire exhaust system rots the fastest. Moisture, heat, and chemicals from the road bite hard.

So my question is: how can we protect the areas that rust the hardest? I'm talking about exhaust joints, exhaust welds, and exhaust manifold.

Copper slip?

Hammerite do a high temperature paint

Very High Temperature paint is a good call. Hopefully I will find a brand that holds on exhaust manifold too.

What is the easiest way to remove the rust from an exhaust manifold and prepare it for painting?

On the other hand, I have read a topic on another forum that tried to discourage the idea of rust protecting the silencers based on the fact they rust from the inside. What is your call? Silencers have drain holes, right?

A shaft mounted rotary wire brush in a power drill is good for removing rust and scale.

painting them is a good call, but ideally it ought to be done when the metal parts are new.

Don't bother painting the exhaust manifold, it will just come off.

You mean if I clean the incipient rust to bare metal and paint those areas with VHT paint, it will come off?

I am a little confused by your reply. It's a good call to paint new parts, but not a good idea to paint on clean metal?

Then how about using HT sealant for exhaust over clean metal and heated as requested? It looks very strong after curing. I only need to paint the rusted areas shown in the photo, the welds and the flanges.

All I want to avoid is this:

Some tried HT paint...

...and some tried HT sealant...

...but I don't have any information on what happened in time.

I would have to go to our local mechanics...

...and hope for the best.

I made some tests on a couple of rusted pipes.

First I cleaned them both with a rotary wire brush to shiny metal. I painted one pipe with HT paint and I coated the other with HY liquid gasket stuff (first I heated the pipe with a propane torch)

Daily I heated both pipes on hot coals for 10 minutes then let them outside to rain on them.

After 2 weeks the winner is... HT liquid gasket!
