Scout broken spring

Featured Replies

Nasty knocking noise on the Scout has turned out to be a broken NSF spring. Bit disapointed as Its only done 23k and never seen any off road work apart from the odd caravan site.

New springs were £166 with discount from Skoda, local mechanic is fitting them tomorrow.

Uneven pot holed UK roads + springs made from poor materials = recipe for disaster.

My old Polo GTI had both front springs replaced at different times - first one was after only 5,000 miles.

You'll start to recognise and see lots of springs lying over the roads.

A common repair, but disappointing all the same.

The plague of pot holes these days can snap a brand new spring.

My Scout has low mileage (50,000) but is getting on a bit now at 7 years old (2008) and it is still on the original springs.

The cups at the front however are badly corroded so it's only a matter of time.

I find the Scout the most heavily sprung car (at the front) I've ever driven. If I pass over the speed humps or level crossing near me a little too fast the front suspension really bangs (the same speeds in any other car are silent!). I'm sure this will soon expose any weakness in the springs...

You should slam your scout now you have the chance.

Given the chance I'd increase the ride height of our Scout!

After almost 70,000 miles in a vRS I'm at a point where I favour soft and comfortable over hard and firm!

Must be getting old  :sun:

In time-gone-by an ex was driving her Felicia, and tw@tted a baby badger one night, not only did it almost rip off the metal engine undertray (it remained attached by just one screw), it also caused the cup on the offside front strut to drop and then rub on the tyre for the final few miles.  I only saw the damage the next morning.

Ouch!

Just trade it for a standard 4x4.

"Getting"? Are you sure that's the right tense? ;) ;)

I know! When I was typing that response and used the words hard and soft I knew I was in for some stick, lol!!

Exactly this, in the old days a road spring would last forever! But now the modern trend is for manufacturers to cut corners and use the cheapest recycled spring steel they can lay their hands on. Happy days for skoda, it means they can sell you a replacement spring every 3 years.

I was also originally joking about slamming it by the way! Too subtle? You should come to Sheffield, I think there's more potholes than actual surfaced road.

Job sorted, needed a new anti roll bar link as well. had a minor service at the same time (supplied my own parts) £80 and back on the road. Those damn pot holes guess it wont be long before another springs gone.

Spoke too soon, loud boing in last week turned out to be a broken rear spring. Local mechanic supplied and fitted 2 new springs for £90.

Not OEM ones this time. It will be interesting to see if they last longer than the Originals on the front.

Do all you guys talking about these terrible potholes not just drive around them, or slow down a little. Just a little forward planning and looking further down the road instead of crashing through them in a straight line. I've seen my fair share of potholes up in the highlands so Scotland so I'm fairly sure I know what a pothole is, never have I sunk a whole wheel into one!

Narrow Road, idiot hurtling towards you, pothole or accident?

I hit the brakes in those instances. It is pretty shocking the state these roads get in but I passed my test avoiding potholes in my big alloys and low profile tyres!

I did too.
