Cracked front windscreen advice please

Featured Replies

Hello all, as topic suggests I have nice big crack in front screen after something (possibly a bullet) flicked up from a vehicle going the other way hit the window, instant big crack.

Now my question, there is a hair line wire running down the centre on the window, what is it for and do I need to specifically ask for a certain spec when speaking to autoglass or the like, this happened a couple of weeks ago and i have spoken to my dealer and asked for advice but got told is a standard window. The car is factory fitted with nav, Bluetooth and dab, which I made a point of telling the dealer but they said the windows are all the same in any spec of car. Can anyone confirm either way?

Thankyou in advance for any help on this.

Wrighty

I have the same hairline wire in my windscreen. Not sure what it is Though :-(. I don't have satnav/dab in mine.

It's the 2nd aerial for your radio, I believe that the term is "diversity".

Your replacement windscreen should also have this for the radio to work correctly.

As per the above. It's an easy change involving a small connector just behind the rearview mirror (watched it being done when I had my windscreen replaced).

Couple of points of note:

  1. Make sure you check that the screen is tinted as per the original one.
  2. The installer may change the two black pieces of trim either side of the windscreen. They have to be removed before the screen can be replaced and some installers have them as a "kit" with the screen, very simple job to remove though.

As long as genuine, Skoda branded glass is fitted ( " OE" ) ordered off the VIN/VRN, there won't be any problems.

There are often issues when cheaper, aftermarket 'copy' screens are used.

It is a pity that has not been how it is with the Major Replacement Windscreen Companies in some instances over the past few years.

Be sure that whoever is fitting the Replacement screen does include fitting new A Pillar Covers if they need to,

so they bring a pair with them.

You have to specifically ask for the original Skoda windshield or they will install a cheap knock off, I went through the same thing. It is not a problem but you have to ask.

Check your lights after the work is done, chap who did mine blew a fuse and I had no lights at all at the back of the car - very upset was I !. They are the small blade ones and not all petrol stations carry them.

My replacement screen was a Pilkington with no discernible differences to the original one.

Seems to be a common thing at the moment this, i went to Scarborough bank holiday Monday on a day out trip only to over take in the fast last to a massive bang on my screen, autoglass came out and attempted to repair but it's gone that deep it starts to crack as soon as you put the slightest pressure on. £75 excess for a replacement :(
