Calling owners of a Skoda Octavia CR 1.6 TDI Elegance Estate.

Featured Replies

After looking at many cars ie VW Golf estates and not being able to find any in good enough condition for my liking and deciding that a Skoda Fabia Estate isn't big enough for our needs, I am now looking at the the above car.

Iv been to look at two Greenline models one had paint issues, repair and re spray on a door- but completely different colour. And second one was just what I was after but sold before I got there.

Iv decided I want an Elegance model now as you get more kit for your moneys.

I'm going to view another tomorrow so was just wondering if there was any model specific faults I should look for bar the usual things to check.

And if any owners of the above car wanted to give me their thoughts on the car that would be great.

So I could still be a Skoda owner after all :)

I can't believe that after deciding the Fabia estate wouldn't be big enough you never went straight to the Octavia!

Golf estate!? Wash your mouth out with soap and water  :D

I have an Octavia estate (or should I say the wife has it), a car big on the inside and fairly normal size on the outside! In fact we've kept the Octavia because we've grown accustom to the boot size and there simply aren't any other cars out there that can compete without being overly massive!

My neighbour just changed his MkII 2.0 PD140 Octavia estate for a MkIII 1.6 CR105, he say's it quieter but lacks the power of his old car for accelerating on the motorway and overtaking etc.

Having just bought one, I would say check the CCV doesn't leak a lot of oil.  Seems to be a problem on mine, but as yet other 1.6 CR TDI owners on here haven't been forthcoming as to if this is a normal issue or is mine is knackered :-(

The 105 certainly feels like it lacks the acceleration of my old 110TDI mk1 estate, so I am sure that is helping to improve my MPGs!

Ha ha you are totally right mate but fancied a bit of VW goodness lol.

However now looking at a good few I actually prefer the Octavias :)

What's the score with the Elegance model with the headlamp washers are they xenons?

Do they have the aux in the armrest for an I phone input?

Cheers :)

Hi!

I've got a TDI 105 CR and have to say I'm really pleased with it!

Well, it's no racecar but to have only 105hp I have to say it's fairly quick :) But 1000-1500rpm is a bit of a grey zone.

I also find it really comfortable and it got thumbs up from my back last weekend after a 300km drive and there's not many cars that gets that ;)

Fueleconomy as well are really good in my mind, I'm currently at 53-54mpg on 18" 225's.

Overall I'm really happy with our buy and think it's a great car with loads of clever storage and good spaces. Only negative thing I know is it's pretty noisy on our roads in Sweden.

Good luck!

It's always been a bit of a Skoda theme, fitting headlight washers to their cars, even those without xenon's. Maybe the roads in the Czech Republic get dirtier than ours!

There are three models that get headlight washers as standard without xenon's fitted, the 4x4, Scout and Elegance. The L&K (later models) get them too but they have xenon's as standard.

To tell if an Elegance (facelift only) has xenon's you need to look out for the AFS (cornering system), the rectangle shape next to the projector lens...

On the pre-FL you'll need to check the headlight switch, cars without the manual beam height adjustment have xenon's (as xenon's level themselves using sensors on the suspension), this car has xenon's (no manual beam adjustment)...

No xenon's...

Cheers for clarifying that for me :) much appreciated. I viewed the car earlier and am pleased to say Iv left a deposit and pick it up next Sat. Next week is going to be a long week, especially after having all of this week off too lol.

How would I go about retro fitting an OEM sat nav to the car? Do I have to lose the Bolero unit and replace with another? Are they expensive?

Do they have the aux in the armrest for an I phone input?

3.5mm jack socket inside the arm rest

SD card slot  and six CD changer in the Bolero

Thanks for your reply, I found the aux input in the armrest :) what cable is everyone using for their iPhones?

Is the CD changer inside the stereo?

Don't know what cable to use.

The CD's load straight into the head unit.

You can also use the phone through the Bolero if you have a bluetooth unit to plug into the HU.

I don't suppose you would know the part no and cost of the Bluetooth unit? And are they easy to fit also? Thanks :)

FWIW now, I would not buy anything with the 1.6 TDI engine or Xenons because of the possible on-costs with that engine (EGR etc.) and with the replacement of the Xenon bulbs - just do some searches on the those issues. !

Edited: from what I learnt from this thread, I realised that my Octy does NOT have Xenons - Hurray!

Enlighten me lol iv tried searching but the search on here is not great.

Just to clarify my new car doesn't have xenons, just headlamp washers in the bumper :)

Just use Google on the wider internet - not just on this forum.

WFIW, had I known about some of the issues with the 2.0l BKD engine in my Octy, I might had have bought an "old fashioned" 1.9 diesel version (my old Mk IV Golf 1.9TDI now has 185k miles on it in the hands of my neighbour and has suffered far less engine-related problems than the Octy at 112k miles ). Buying the "latest  and greatest" is sometimes not the best idea if you don't buy new but want to keep a car for a long time!

Have many people on here had EGR or DPF issues with there cars?

I think if I do get problems il probaly delete the EGR and DPF and buy the package from Darkside with the remap. Anybody done this on here?

You can pick these up on ebay, either a genuine VW / Skoda unit or a Fiscon unit

I had two 1.6 CR TDI's and both had covered around 80k when I traded them in I had no issues with EGR or DPF.

Thanks for that will take a look.

That's good to know and a little reassuring that you had two with no problems :)

DPF issues are only really on the older (now out of production) 2.0 PD170 engine fitted to the pre-FL vRS model.

The 1.6 CR105 engine is well suited to the DPF, very few reported issues.

The EGR tends to only become a problem if the car is used for regular short journey's. Stretching it's legs every so often should keep it clear enough for trouble-free use.

Yes, xenon bulbs are more expensive (£60-£80 each) but they last far, far longer than traditional halogen bulbs, and then you need to figure in the improved light output.

Two comments:

- As I said earlier, buying a new car is a different proposition to buying a used one - so I think that a person buying an 80k miles vehicle is far more likely to run into EGR/DPF issues, especially if they aim to do relatively short journeys, than the original purchaser.

- Xenon bulbs may "only" cost £60-£80, but you appear to be likely to pay 2-3 times that amount to get them fitted if you use a decent fitter as the car manufacturers advise that these must be professionally fitted - i.e. not a DIY job - due to the high voltages involved.

There are lots of warnings in the owners manual recommending a professional for certain jobs, changing the battery etc.

Replacing the xenon bulbs may be one of them but it unnecessary. Replacing the xenon bulbs is no more difficult or dangerous than with halogen headlights.

There are plenty of examples on here now of DPF's doing high mileage without issue, they really aren't the issue they used to be especially those fitted to Common Rail (CR) diesels.

EGR issues are cropping up now though on the original pre-FL Octavia's (2005-2009) but still rare on the FL (2009-2013).

Will do Silver1011 looking forward to it.

I must say coming from the Skoda Fabia MK1 section to here, you all seem a helpful and friendly bunch and that is a credit to this site :)

I am glad iv decided to stay Skoda my previous car that was highly modified over the years never gave me any grief bar a small couple of things, so made sense to stay Skoda in the end.
