Thoughts on what to do

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I would be grateful for your thoughts on my best upgrade car wise. I currently have a 1.9TDi 07 Fabia Mk2 - spec level 3. I am doing a lot of miles on it these days, its currently on 102K and back in the garage again having broken down at the weekend with a broken drive shaft.

Currently its in a Skoda dealer - I have always had an extended warranty and found the breakdown cover very useful on Saturday when the drive shaft fell off, for no apparent reason which is a bit of a concern!

I am spending approximately £200 a month on it, just to keep it running (suspension linkages, wiring fault, another suspension linkage, and a big service in January means I have spent over £1000 since Christmas on it, plus the extended warranty I have which doesn't cover everything)

In an ideal world I want another Fabia exactly the same, very sad I know. My reasons for this are, I like the spec and the 1.9TDi has NO DPF! I have heard some horrendous DPF stories at work, from friends and a few tales on here too so I am put off them.

My father has just changed from diesel to petrol - replacing his Octavia with a 1.2 TSI 86ps. Though I am reluctant to do this as I do over 20,000 miles a year.

Some people have rumoured that diesel cars are about to get hammered by the government for emissions too, which I am a bit wary of.

I just wondered if any of you had any further thoughts? The garage I go to have a 1.9TDi though its a sport model, so I will comprise on spec a bit (Maxi dot, arm rest, cruise, climate, and a few other touches). The sport does look nice though, in black! I know its an older model, just debating whether its the right move!

I have spotted a very nice black Monte 1.2TSI 105 as well, it is well above my budget, though only has 6K on the clock.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

well if you get the 1.9 sport, you are getting the engine you are used to ect, no DPF, same pulll....

the monte 1.2 is a much more modern feel.... the engine is a gem, suprisingly fast , and quite economical too..... no real issues with it, I doubt it would be much difference in running costs, it would be quieter and more refined...

personally , I would go for the more modern monte if you can stretch to it :)

Alternatively, you could find a good local indie garage and stop using a main agent, cancel the warranty and hang on to yours. Sounds like youve had a pricey few months but you know its been well maintained and should have plenty of life left.

I know its not what you asked, but it seems to me like if you get one exactly the same you could potentially have to pay out for all the same problems again.

Ive got the dpf diesel and am at 70k with no dpf related issues as yet. Tax and insurance are reasonable too, and at 25k a year its less polluting than petrol engines (as far as i understand it...).

As you cover a fair mileage, a DPF should have no issues ' cos it's getting up to operating temperature. 'Shopping' cars don't like DPFs.

As above, though, you have maintained the current car well so it's a shame to have to change at such a low mileage for a 1.9Pd engine.Found an 86,000 mile Pd Octy for one of my sons and anticipate a good few thousand more..,.

Maybe find a good independent repairer, lots of advice on BRISKODA.

Thanks everyone :thumbup::)

I like the look of the sport, though feel I am comprising on spec!

I have toyed with what I am going to do with mine for a bit, had it for 3 years now and I am just aware its starting to cost money. I don't think an exhaust is too far off and the heat shield is also falling off! So thats another fix on the horizon.

I know the PD is a good engine so I am keen for another. Just the threat of government action on diesels is the only thing that puts me off!

About the only threat is on Diesels in Cities & that charges, sometime in the Future.

A Diesel Car bought for someone using cars for Business are hardly going to get taxed off the road,

not before some Diesel Car Scrappage Scheme comes in.

Thanks everyone :thumbup::)

Great engine the 1.9 PD, I loved mine but it was in a Mk1 and the leaky door cards got the better of me. I love the 1.2 Tsi but with your mileage the diesel is probably the better bet.

It's hard to say what the governments action on diesels will be but I suspect with the amount on the road and new cars in the pipe line it won't be too drastic for a while yet.

As for getting worried about the governments actions as such, I reckon after May 7th we are ALL in for a rough ride mate. :sweat:

:rain: Yip, same for me.

We've just brought a 75k mile 1.2TSi Elegance Estate and so far very impressed with it. The 1.2TSi is incredible little unit, feels very much larger than it is. On our journey back from Poole to home it did 45MPG which is really good. Plus it has SMF, no DPF and relatively understressed.

20K miles a year is still workable (and imo preferable) in a petrol. I do 15K a year in a 1.8TSi @ 33MPG (brim to brim ave) and its much nicer place to be and drive than a 2.0TDi PD 140 @ 44MPG ( I have 18 roundabouts on my 30 mile journey to work!)

Petrol all the way!
