front calipers vrs

Featured Replies

Hey folks

Recently put new discs and pads on all round but it seems tht one of the slider pins on the drivers side doesnt wanna slide. I've taken it completely out, cleaned out the channel, lubed it up and refitted it but it still does this squeek at slow speeds as if the pad hasn't completely slid back out after braking. My question is, can I buy new seals for the slider pins or do I need a new caliper?

Thanks in advance folks.

Not quite sure what the slider-pin is?

The caliper should easily move on rods, whereas the pads sit in metal channel shims.

Copper grease to all contact surfaces apart from the obvious, not going to insult your intelligence..

personally I'd take the caliper off again and reassemble everything making sure the metal shims that the pads ride on are in the right place and secure, also take slide pins out again clean out the chanels that they slide in and relube using silicone grease on the slide pins (any other grease will degrade the rubber) and if the problem persists after that then look at replacing bits

Hope this helps

Thanks guys.

I took the shims out n wire brushed them and the caliper, sat them in n copper greased em all up So I know it aint them. There is heavy brake dust on that side so it defo the slide pin that's stuck. I did take the pins out n 1 was very hard to get out. The rubber sleeve kept riding up. may try again. Just was wondering if the rubber sleeve is available to buy?

Does the caliper slide OK left to right on the pin?

If it does, then it could be the brake piston sticking on when brake has been applied, and not returning to it's rest position?

yes you can buy individual parts of the caliper, search for refurb kit you can buy seals, sliders, pistons, the lot.

Might be just as easy and cheap to get a 2nd hand caliper though.

Was thinking this too.as had similar prob last yr with mine.

When I replaced the disc n pads on the passenger side, both guide pins moved back n forth easily but on the drivers side, only one pin moved freely. Had to pull the other one out with grips. I'm thinking the rubber collar that is round the pin n goes inside the caliper itself, is at fault n I cannot find replacements anywhere.

I took both pins out and cleaned the thread and then did same on shaft of pin. Then get as much crap out of its sleeve.

Then slap on copperslip in side sleeve and on both pins. They should slide freely. If you have any other probs it would be a sticking piston.

Is it item 13 on this page that you're after? 6Q0 698 470 ?

If so, any VAG dealer should be able to get you a set, probably/maybe for less than you would pay for one of those ebay sets from Germany.

Remember to use silicone grease on the slide pins. Any other type of grease will degrade the rubber seals

But generally cleaning and regreasing is enough. Unless there is corrosion on the pins themselves

When I had an issue with front brake calipers 'sticking' I discovered that use of Coppaslip had caused the rubber 'sleeves' on the slide pins to swell causing the slide pins to be difficult to move. I had quite a job getting the affected slide pins out of their bores in the caliper carriers.

I used a caliper repair kit (BRK205479) from Bigg Red - biggred.co.uk - to replace the sleeves bellows etc. and then used red rubber grease to lubricate them. Problem solved!!

This was a cost effective solution as I learned that new slide pins and rubber sleeves are only available from Skoda as part of an assembly including new caliper carriers!! Expensive!!

As above, don't use copper slip in any moving part of a brake caliper, sliders/pins or pistons.

Only use it where the pads contact.

How tight were the pads fitting in the caliper?

As a lot of pads Need some of the coating taking off them where they sit in caliper to make them move freely so they don't drag returning. :)

I had the same problem, bought new sliders and rubbers from big red. Cleaned, rebuilt with silicone grease. Few weeks later had the same problem. Sacked it all off for some refurrbed 312mm calipers. That was 3 years ago and they are still running great.
