Upgrading from GSMII to GSMIII

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I (will, in 1 week or so) have a 08/2011 Octavia Combi, fitted with: Columbus Navigation, Maxidot, MFW, and Bluetooth GSM II (without the "cradle holder" for the mobile phone).

I would like to upgrade the bluetooth interface to take advantage of the rSAP funcionality, so I read here and there about the differences between the bluetooth modules.

It seems to me that I would "only" need to swap the bluetooth module with a newer, rSAP capable one, (180€ on Bay..) and do some coding with VCDS, but two question arise!

1) Is my car equipped with the GSM/UMTS aerial, probably in the same housing of the GPS one mounted on the roof, or will I have to swap the external aerial too?

If the external GSM aerial is present, I should find a connector lying around the bluetooth module, if not, I will have to install the proper coaxial cable from under the seat to the aerial on the roof.

Moreover, wich aerial (OEM, of course) should I buy? seeking the Skoda spare parts, there are many units... for veichles with GPS navigation..... for veichles with auxiliary heating... ecc... But I can't find the proper aerial for veichels with GPS NAVIGATION AND rSAP BLUETOOTH .

2) which rSAP bluetooth module shall I buy? I read there are minor differences between the C and D models, but to be honest I'm completely clueless about compatibility and so on..

Hope someone can help... and even if not... thanks for reading anyway :-)

Cheers!

Nicolo'

Welcome!

If your car had satnav fitted as standard, there is a good chance your car already has the correct aerial (mine did when I added rSAP). If you have a look under the headlining there might be a spare purple connector on your current aerial. In this case you just need an extension cable to run from the aerial to the bluetooth module.

If it doesn't have the correct aerial, 6R0 035 501 C is the part number that I found which supports FM/AM (white connector), GPS (blue connector) and GSM (purple connector). If you also need DAB support then it'll be a different part with an extra black connector, I think it's 6R0 035 501 D?

For the bluetooth module, there are number of modules that are functionally similar 5N0 035 730 D or 3C8 035 730 A/B/C. You also have the  3C8 035 730 D/E modules which add a WiFi hotspot when using rSAP to allow your phone to use data again. Out of these, I'd suggest a 3C8 D or E as the added WiFi is very useful.

I assume your phone is also rSAP compatible?

I have the aerial for sale if you want on, I used it for rasp myself before converting to DAB

Well, first of all, thank you very much for the complete answer :-)

If I get the purple connector under the headlining, then I'm done! And I will just need an extension coaxial cable with the right connectors fitted.

Talking about the modules, I'd definitely go for a D/E model.. when upgrading, I prefer to get the latest hardware/firmware revisions that usally work better and sometimes offer something more.. like WiFi, I see! Question is: 5N0 and 3C8 modules are both usable in my car? I mean, what's the difference between them? Should I get a 5N0 or a 3C8?

I eventually searched on the Bay for 6r0035501C and it actually is the 3-socket aerial..but.. there's a hole on the top of it, I think it's there for screwing the "whip" antenna, and when I saw my car at the dealer's, there was no whip. Car has the "shark" shaped aerial on the roof, and it didn't seem to have the hole for screwing anything. So.. my old BMW E39 has the FM diversity aerial integrated into the back glass.. couldn't the 2011 Octavia Combi have it too? Looking on the internet (vagfans.info) for the spare parts, I read (IN THE HEATED REAR WINDOW descriptions!) :

8L3 - Roof Antenna (ANT - Antennas)

8L5 - Roof Antenna ad "Diversity" window antenna (ANT - Antennas)

So I can now be sure that at least this system exist on our beloved cars!

Have you got the part number of a shark-shaped GPS+GSM aerial? Just in case replacement is needed ;-)

About the rSAP compatibility of the phone: I actually use 2 phones. A Samsung S4 for the "internet" things, facebook, whatsapp, ebay and so on... and the "main" one, that I just use for making/receiving calls, battery lasts 4 o 5 days and that needs rSAP most. At the moment, it's a Nokia Lumia 530 (not rSAP compatible), but I got it for 50 euros just because my old phone definitley bricked up, so, after getting the car and the rSAP conversion, I'll go for a new phone whose rSAP compatibility is assured.

Thank you again for the useful infos, I hope I can get the whole thing done as soon as possible (I'm gonna get the car on wed 22.... can't wait!)

Hi Dave, and thank you for reading!

Which one?

Just seen where your from, it'll be easier for you to pick one up from the German ebay I would think, as above just ebay the part number, I found the genuine aerial gave better reception than my phone used to get.

The 3C8 is the updated version of the 5N0 but anything older than the D rev of the 5N0 won't have the functionality you want. There is a great list of what each module supports here: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Telephone_Retrofitting

As for the antenna, I'd suggest you have a look once the car is here. I'm not familiar with the estate but I'd expect two FM antenna connections, one on the roof and the other on a rear side window.

I didn't notice any antenna's without the whip here: http://vagfans.info/EN/skoda/CZ/OCT/Name/2011/663/R/035/35025/roof-antenna

Thank you very much indeed everyone for reading, answering and helping me so much :-)

I got on the Bay a 3C8 035 730 E, 48th week 2014, HW revision 025, SW revision 0983.

Being so recently built, compatibility with almost every phone should be granted.

Now I'm waiting for the car :notme:

I'll let you know asap!
