Tyre Pressure Monitors

Featured Replies

Any one else having 'issues' with these? This morning it pinged again to say front left.  I haven't checked the pressure yet but it doesn't look down.  I will be checking it before driving home.  However this is the third time it has happened in less thn a year and each of the other times there has been nothing wrong.

Does anyone know how the system works or what I could check?  I know it doesn't work off an actual pressure.

Thanks

When you check and inflate your tyres, do you then set the TPMS ?

The difference in the rotation (total Diameter) is picked by the ABS system when a tyres size changes.

Not always noticing slow deflations though.

It had new boots about a month ago and I reset it all after that.

I've had it come on once or twice since getting the car (2 months 3500km) and the pressure was fine. The Scirocco (which uses the same ABS based system) "regularly" comes on even though the pressure in the tyres is identical). I get the warning mostly after some riguorous twisty B-road driving ;)

I just stop at the next safe parking spot, visually check the tyres and then check the pressure at the next service station. Better safe than sorry.

I had my tyre pressure monitor activate last week. The tyres appeared ok but when checked they were all low. The system seems quite good so I would definitely check it. Even if they are only off by a few PSI it will be making a difference to your fuel economy.

I had that problem on a Renault Espace, TPMS are more trouble than they are worth, however the EU is making it statutory on all new models to have TPMS fitted

First step is to check them all.

The Mk3's/MQB system is much better in that it will actually tell you which tyre it is.  The newer TPMS from what I hear is better at detecting slow punctures and pressure drops from the last reset point, as well as the usual difference between the other tyres.

I also understand it's tolerances are finer than previous versions VAG fitted so *should*  tell you of a problem pretty much immediately.  Certainly the one in the Mk7 Golf GTD I borrowed did

But wasn't the Renault system based on sensors within each tyre that fed the info back to the onboard computer. Those systems were a bit iffy apparently (since they were also one of the first ones) and the fact that you couldn't get all the tyre wheel combos you wanted but onyl specific ones made it also quite expensive.

Yup, this.
