draining the oil filter

Featured Replies

Hi,

On my 2010 1.8tsi the oil filter is "standing" upside down, so when I want to replace it all the oil left inside just spills all over the engine and whats below it.

How can i drain it before i take it off?

Thanks

If its anything like the TDI filters, you remove the cap and then remove the filter element from the housing (I used to lift it using a bag or glove and wrap it up to stop the drops). Rather than a traditional screw off and replace the whole shabang housing and all.

Wrap plenty of kitchen roll under to catch any drips, undo filter about 1-2 turns iirc, oil should drain back into engine and I think there is a valve built onto the filter that shoud seal its contents. Allow 2-3 minutes before unscrewing the oil filter completely.

Have you done that and the Oil came out.?

There are VW filters that close and trap the oil. and that left in the filter does not go all over the engine.

As above, genuine filters don't spill contents of oil when removed.

Turn the filter about 1 turn (the gasket still has to be in contact) & wait a minute or 2.  There's a special drain back valve (breech pin) that allows the oil to drain from the filter back into the engine.   Mines had about 20 filter changes & never embarrassed itself.

Hi,

Thanks, so I punched a small hole at the top eith a screwdriver and then unscrewed the filter slowly 1 turn at a time and it worked just fine, no dripings at all. I could actually hear the oil going down slowly. Not sure that the hole at the top was necessary as you guys didn't mention anything about it.

Brad thanks for the book, I've been looking a lot for such information.

hole at top not needed.  Sound barbaric :p
