Radiator Fan

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Fabia '02 8v.

I've been a lurker for a couple of months and recently used the help of briskoda to replace my rear shocks myself and they're still working!

So a big thankyou to whoever posted a helpful guide, couldn't have done it without that.

But now I'm stumped, electrical problems for me are a PITA.

Recently the radiator fan has just refused to start up even when the car gets above the half mark on the temp gauge, this is when it used to come on and used to stay on after I turned the ignition off for a couple of minutes.

1 fan i assume as I have no air con.

Now after endless searching and trying to research this I've found I need to check:

Fuses - for the life of me even after looking at fuse maps I can't see which one is for the rad fan?

The fusible links, pretty straight forward.

Thermostatic switch - is this something that can cause the fan not to cut in?

I've seen a lot of people replacing these because the temp gauge isn't working inside the car but no mention of replacing it because the fan isn't working.

The wiring plug - I believe this is near the thermostatic switch and I need to test this with spare wire.

And I also need to check the motor using a 12 volt power supply - this i have no idea - is this the case of using a spare lead to run power direct from the battery or is that way wrong?

If all else fails I have an auto electrician coming out next week which i wanted to avoid as it means costly diagnosis fee and costly repair fee for something that's likely to be minor.

Am i missing anything or is there anything that is very common in why these fail?

Hopefully someone can help as I've seen a lot of questions on this topic go unanswered.

Cheers, Tom

The thermostatic switch is different to the temp sensor, which is what affects the temp guage. The fan switch will stop the fan from working yes, so I would recommend changing it. I have one that i have no use for if you pay postage? Also have a fan that is surplus to requirements
