painting my grill.

Featured Replies

Took my grill off my fabia last night and rubbed it down and applied a few primer coats. Allowed it to dry overnight and used some 800 on it earlier to clean up before applying black magic, it's had 3 coats of black magic so far, looks good but do I rub it Down before I apply laquer or do I dive in with laquer, also do I apply lots of light coats of laquer or a few heavier ones? Sorry for all the questions, new to this :)

I can't help you but am interested in doing this to the chrome parts on my car so will appreciate any answers or advice given to the OP.

Does it have a nice smooth finish? If so leave it & apply a few layers of thin lacquer. If the lacquer feels rough after its cured then you can flat that down & apply more

The finish of the paint appears to be nice and smooth yeah, might give it 1 more coat and laquer it tomorrow, though I read somewhere it's good to apply laquer soon after last coat of paint?

Here's a pic of part of it, looks orange peel maybe on the pic but not so much in person, think it might be the metallic fleks in the paint.

Looks good to me

Im happy with the end result, better than my last attempt at it :D

always nervous with rattle-cans as they are usually frowned upon, difficult to get a good finish with them, now i just gotta let it cure, means driving to work with no grill tomorrow :(

Very nice work - the results look high quality!

Post up some finished pics when its on the car....

Looks pretty good :-D The trick with rattle can lacquer is getting a heavy enough coat for it to completely wet. That's the key to a good gloss. Too light of a coat will give a dry dull finish

Fitted it today, looks great, im ocd so may have to use some extremely fine wet and dry at some point to get rid of the tiny imperfections, but very happy!

Anyone know if the one that comes with the monte'carlo is just gloss black or black magic?

Looking at some pics of the ones you can buy from superskoda they just look gloss black

nvm, found somewhere that details it as being black magic.. :giggle:

Bit of a further update.

Whilst speaking to a colleague at work the other day about paintwork ect, he mentioned he had a machine buffer that hes never used, turned out it was a RAC one originally from halfords i believe, anyway he said i could have it freebies :).

So i realise its not the best buffer and it shall soon be replaced by a more professional one, but by all means a good one to play / practice with, so below are some before / after pics.

- Regarding my mirror caps i painted those a long while ago and was never happy with the orange peel lacquer so i had a go at improving them, walked away from the car with a big smile today! :)

-Regarding the front grill ive now got those pesky imperfections nailed!

Haha i know right  .

Funnily enough it took about 15 mins per mirror cap, and about 20-25 mins for the grille.

Though my hands are still shaking from the vibration of the bloody thing :x
