Think I have a bust injector

Featured Replies

This video doesn't make for good viewing and explains slightly poor fuel economy and the smoke at Combe as well.  :(

is that something VCDS would pick up and tell you which Cylinder number it is, Jase?

  • Author

Not sure it would as picks up on electric signals?   Might go have another play in measuring blocks again.

Check the injector balance and PD valve status in vcds.

Block 013 I think the balance one is.

I've ran a log of measuring block 13 and it doesn't seem to reveal anything that I can see.

Not sure this picture tag will show big enough

Well, my mapper thinks the smoke is oil not diesel.  I don't know how to prove either way but this is looking very costly and probably involves a fair amount of time off the road.   :(

Not good with How Fast and The Pod coming up,  Might need to put all on hold.

Oh and the oil burning theory is further backed up by the engine doing this smoking "a bit" when running with 5w 40 oil.  It had long life 5w 30 oil done last time and since then smoke has got worse and worse, and oil got hotter than ever at Combe in a short space of time.  Hot oil not good.  :(

Have you checked your oil level then?

  • Author

Yeah - It's not been using it excessively.  Was still pretty full after the two sessions at Combe.  Will check again in the morning before heading for work.

Might be worth taking off a boost pipe and checking how much oil is in the pipes also?

If it's burning oil in the engine, it's going to be a valve stem oil seal or piston rings then..?

Both are a bitch to change really, not a two minute job.

Well, the darkside hardpipe kit only went on about 8 to 10 weeks ago and there was nothing in the old pipework which was removed.

If it is the bottom end I will likely do a 2 litre conversion as part of a bottom end rebuild.

Sounds good. Cheating though :D

Best not jump the gun yet on my bad advice anyway, hopefully get to the bottom of it soon!

Turbo probably to inspect first.  Maybe running 40PSI not such a good move, but I gathered the turbo could take it, and know of at least one over 3 bar of boost.

Could be a lot of things, injector seals could be worth a look as a easy start point :)

If it was injector seals, it will be disappointing as only redone a matter of months ago. :(

Weird thing is if I hold say 3000rpm up a hill - just maintaining speed, the smoke is a lot less than maintaining same speed at under 2000 revs.

I can't see that being a ring issue as it would likely do it all the time. Seems to be worse under throttle which would suggest turbo seals or valve stem oil seals.

Not 100% sure if on a diesel you can test valve stem oil seals the same as a petrol, as they smoke more on over run if they are gone on a petrol engine.

I'd expect it to be smokey on start up if it was the valve stem oil seals.

It does have bad cold start smoke too.

probably the easiest and cheapest thing to try first.

Did you fit a Bosch seal kit?

presuming the car is going ok, holding boost, not down on power etc?

Good boost, good power. United diesel did full oem seal change before bench testing and sending to me. :)

in that first log injector 2 looks to moving out of sync more then the rest 9(s this logged at idle or driving)

must admit it look me & faboka a while to get my cold start sorted and idling without white smoke

having now looked at that video thats exactly how mine was until we got the durations and timing set for the DSSR nozzles, maybe Faboka can better explain

that won't explain his excessive oil consumption though :(

Well some good news is the turbo appears to have a clean bill of health.

So now the injector units are coming out to be sent to United Diesel for testing.  I suspect a broken body or something.  I have no idea how to interpret the fuelling logs so can't comment on that.

As for the oil consumption, it could be down to a few things - the thinner oil, the thrashing at Combe on Saturday - I might have taken readings when car wasn't perfectly level / at same angle each time.  That is something I will have to keep an eye on, but as part of the injector whip out / test / refit, the car will be filled with fresh PD 5w 40.
