Somebody ban this guy.

He's insulted the Skoda brand, dropped a fellow Briskodian in the **** and mentioned that Vau***** word. Doesn't the 3 strikes rule apply on here?

Worst of all he's talking completely misinformed nonsense

There are at least 2 people on here at the moment intent on knocking the Skoda brand and generally trying to rock the proverbial apple cart.

The opinions of these individuals count for nothing and therfore should be treated as appropriate and IGNORED.

If they want to continue to submit misinformed posts and look rather stupid in doing so then thats fine.

That is all I am going to say on the matter as I am off down the beach to get a tan and my beer is getting warm:cheers:.

I think your making assumptions there.. where has DStev2000 said he has a tuningbox?

and you rekon a astra is better built than a skoda... hahaha:rofl:

Just an update on my fuel consumption (not getting into the argument about build quality as a TVR and ex-Lotus owner).

My 2.0TDi (manual) is now 9 months old and has 25k on it. It seemed to really loosen up at around 15k miles and now is running really well. I do drive it hard most of the time, so am never going to get 60mpg from it, but I am more than happy with the consumption I am getting.

Saying that, the computer is quite a bit out on its calcualtions compared to the actual amount of fuel that I'm putting in the tank (assuming petrol pumps are regularly calibrated).

I regularly do 400 miles in a day and the trip computer usually shows around 50-51mpg overall. Calculated on fuel used, its more like 45-46mpg, so I reckon its around 10% too optimistic. Having said that, for my driving style and the performance of the car, I'm happy enough with that. My previous Mondeo TDCI 130 used to average around 41 - 43mpg, at best.

Glad to hear your fuel consumption has improved over time, it's to be expected as the innards of the car loosen up of course.

I'm still averaging about 41 mpg at the moment on good motorway drives so there is still loads of room for improvement.

Lets try and get this thread back on track, thats fuel consumption if I remember correctly!

I'm averaging 41.9 averall since i got the car. 90% of my driving is urban and i've a pretty heavy right foot (cos i'm always running late). Can't complain about that.

Ok' date=' the Lambo is a poor mans Bugatti Veyron as well :D

All this "poor mans VW" is just silly nonsense.

Before anyone tells me to calm down, I am very calm right now, just come in from a walk along the beach with SWMBO and my "poor mans VW" is absolutely fantastic.

:D :D :D

P.S.

Does that also mean a Vauxhall is a poor mans SAAB?

I've left a space for the smart ar$e remarks below.

Nope it means that a SAAB is a rich mans Vaxhall.

Seriously my brothers g/friends dad has one and i think it has spent longer in the dealer than on the road. Feel sorry for the bloke tbh.

Nuff said, i'll avoid the GM camp for now.

I had a similar experience with a Nissan and it's soul destroying.

I wouldn't say no to a Monaro though (it's not a Vauxhall either, it's a ruddy re badged Holden).

Is it me or did posts just go?

Looks like you are right.

Attached is my mpg log for my Octavis PD140. Trip computer often says over 55mpg, but my data based on milage covered. Am using VAg COM to educate fuel computer average to be closer to the truth. So anybody test driving a second hand Octavia watch out! Don't do much town driving, most journies over 30 miles. Early MPG was generally worse, improved by 10-15 miles per tank once I got shot of the HARSH, NOISY Bridgestones. Much, much better on Coni's. Bad results are usually when I'm towing my glider!

Kept similar log for my Octavia I, TDI 110, W reg, did 105000 from new and avreaged 50.5 over the whole period. So the old Octavia was slightly more economical. But I much prefer new model in every way.

Well done!

A very thorough and informative chart.

Thank you!

Thats very useful - but I see you don't look for the cheapest diesel around. In fact, you must struggle to pay so much for it.

I'm averaging 94.9p/litre, with Shell garages being the cheapest usually.

Got a 1.9TDI MK II Octy as a hire car yesterday and was seriously struggling to get great fuel economy. 47.9 in one direction and 51.2 in the other which is v poor compared to what I get from my MK 1 Octy TDI110 for the same journey.

If you're after the cheapest petrol (or diesel) stations in your area check out http://www.petrolprices.com/.

Cool site & provides free email updates.

Cheers

When travelling around I'm always aware that Northamptonshire is dear for fuel, currently averaging 97.9 to 99.9 for diesel, even near supermarkets.

I never ever use supermarket diesel as you can't be sure of additives package, except perhaps for Waitrose, who I see BP tankers delivering too.

Whenever I can I use BP Optimax, which gives slightly better mileage (you can guess which is OPtimax on my data by price, then do scatter type plot and the visual correlation is fairly convincing, I reckon on about 2%, 10-15 miles a fill) but certainly not enough to cover its extra cost. However the quieter running and better "punch" one ECU has "adapted" is more than worth a few extra pence per litre, to me. I pay so much tax on the stuff, that paying a little extra for what I see as a superior product (smells better too!) is fine by me.

I also always use the super expensive 507.00 oil, circa £12 a litre (but I pay about £8 a litre buying it from Germany) every 5000 miles which might also help a bit.
