Gearbox is an easy job on these. Starter motor is the pain. Engine and gearbox out to replace one and its a pig of a job. 2 days to do one at a main dealers.

I have a soft spot for these......following!

Gearbox is currently off the car due to the clutch needing replacing, you don't need to take the engine out although it would make things easier. I reckon you only need to take the plenum and throttle bodies off to get at the starter, unless it's got the y bracket on but most people end up leaving it off the car as it makes things easier in the future.

Very nice.

Only 1150kg for a four wheel drive car?

No wonder they were always so nippy!

I know someone who specialised in these (in Essex) but they are getting so few and far between he's had to move onto other things to pay the bills.

The community is still going strong. Their is a guy who owns one of the forums who also owns a pulsar breakers yard and now he has set up a garage with a rolling road ect. He is very dedicated to keeping them on the road and is trying to develop them further.

Edit sorry Wikipedia has them listed as 1220 kg not 1150.

That's great for enthusiasts.

Nice there is a bit of a support network for owners.

It's been a while since I last did an update. Since my last post the clutch had given up so I have replaced the clutch, after replacing the clutch I had quite a lot of judder when changing gears which alarmed me but after driving it for about a 1000miles it has bedded in nicely.

Whilst the gearbox was out I reinforced the clutch fork as they are known to fail especially if you have fitted a heavier clutch.

Also I took the liberty of replacing the C.V. joint boots as well I had found a small split in one of the inners so it needed to be done.

Also after fitting the clutch I managed to source from one the members of the Pulsar forum a clutch bracket reinforcement bracket. It's the little black piece of metal that goes from the clutch pedal to the brake and accelerator pedal assembly, it again helps stop the clutch pedal from breaking away from the bulkhead if you've fitted a heavier clutch.

Since owning the car the horn has never worked electrics are not my thing but as the MOT was looming I had to give it a go, so after some poking and prodding I found the culprit.

IMG_1014_zpshitsn3lr.jpg

Both the wires going to the connectors had broken off so happy days an easy quick fix and I now have a working horn.

Next job on the list was to replace the front end bushes it looks like I have original 20 year old standard bushes on the car that have defiantly seen better days some replacements were in order.

Time to strip the anti roll bar off the car first.

IMG_1024_zpspwblnzax.jpg

As you can see the bushes have seen better days.

New bushes in place. Unfortunately I didn't take any of the wishbone bushes as time was getting on and I hit a few problems but they are all fitted now roll bar inner and outer and wishbone front and rear anti castor.

betthats a huge difference looking at those end bushes!

Yes mate much better now they were quite badly worn but for 20+ year old parts that's to be expected.

Did you change the flywheel out ?

Did you change the flywheel out

No I just used the original one.

No I just used the original one.

Are they just light friction marks in the picture? Wasn't sure as it looks lightly scored?

(Hence judder)

That picture is the pressure plate the scores are from where one of the springs had fallen out and got in between.

I was told it was best to have the flywheel skimmed but I decided to take the risk. I gave the flywheel a good sanding with some emery cloth and so far it seems to have bedded in ok, still a little bit of judder but if you give it some more revs it settles down.

The new clutch is quite a bit beefier than the old one I think the old one was a cheap ebay copy.

I was experience some fluctuations in my oil pressure gauge so with them being 20 year old items the chances are they are getting a bit tired so some new ones were ordered.

IMG_1139_zpsgp3ij8p1.jpg

Time to drain the oil so I can remove and install the new senders.

IMG_1141_zpsvlnmiqxd.jpg

New vs old

IMG_1145_zps3jkucywx.jpg

Oil filter removed and the old oil pressure sensor on the car.

Oil pressure sender removed.

IMG_1143_zpsrgmpwhk7.jpg

New oil filter installed and oil pressure line fitted.

IMG_1149_zpstlob1glj.jpg

Oil temp sender fitted into the sump.

IMG_1150_zpscocpm0xb.jpg

Gauges now fitted into the dash surround.

IMG_1146_zpsqgqdhgpx.jpg

And finally wired and plumbed in.
