Climatronic display

The display on my climatronic unit on my octavia elegance has partially disappeared, the buttons still work and it still lights up at night however only bits of the lcd display are working. Is there a fix for this or is time to look for a second hand unit?

It's almost certainly the LCD panel starting to break down I'm afraid.

Not seen this before on this unit but on similar industrial equipment it is more likely the contacts on the display; either rubber edge contacts or a plug in cable. 

If you are confident, give the connectors a wiggle or clean.

I have had a few vw group cars with it fitted but its never happened before. It still works at the moment just abit annoying that i cant see whats being selected and part of the temp readout is missing. Theres a few on ebay around the 12 quid mark so cheap enough to get another. Is the superb unit the same? I assume they are just plug and play no coding needed or anything like that?
