Alloys and tyres

Featured Replies

Am wondering if anyone would like to give the benefit of their experience when it comes to changing alloys and tyres. I have a Corrida Red Spaceback with style pack which is "crying out" for me to change the stock 15" Carme alloys. I have been thinking about this for a couple of months now and will probably go for gloss black, 8-10 spoke (not diamond cut). My dilemma is whetherto go for 16s and have the slightly "taller" tyre to give a bit more cushioning with uneven road surfaces, potholes etc or 17s and a firmer ride. Suspension is stock. I know that several members have upgraded to 17s, just wondering if anyone hs gone the 16 route. Thanks.

Boring i know, but

Why not just stick with function and practicality over looks and style and stay with the more cushioning of the 15" rims and tyres.

& use the money saved on something else?

17,s were standard on my Sport and I wouldn't say it's a bad ride. I can't feel anything firmer when I was on stock springs but now with Eibachs it feels even better.

Our Spaceback is also on standard 17" rims, although I've switched from Camalot to Savio rims. Have also run the car on the 15" option with winter pattern tyres. Would normally be in favour of smaller rims and deeper tyres but with the Spacebak I find it seems to suite the 17" option.

Oh also tested a Spaceback on the 16" wheels but again I find the 17" my preference, although there's little in it to be fair.

Think the 15" wheel option would probably work better with the alternative 195/55 tyres but I suspect emissions persuaded SUK to go with the 185/60 rubber.

Skoda are starting to offer some good alloys now the 16" black beam alloys from the new Fabia would look good on the spaecback as would the 17" savio metallic black alloy.

The ride on 17" wheel is not as bad as people make out I had two Fabia vRS estate's and the ride was very good you can feel that the ride is firmer but it's not rock hard there is some give in the suspension

Even on 40 profile tyres it's still a nice ride. No loss of comfort [emoji106]

Agree the 17's with 215/40's don't mess up the ride - however tyre choice is important - No rubbish like the factory OE sportmaxx.

Go to tyrereviews.co.uk for all the tyre gen you need.

Also wider tyres on 16/17s will cost you mpg (3-5mpg less in my experience) compared with the trolley wheels you have got.

If you look on skoda auto cz website you can see there are more factory alloy options than the UK normally get eg Rays in all silver, all black, or diamond cut.

I cant see why they would not be obtainable here.

Finally there has been no end of moaning on here about scuffing black alloys, especially the diamond cut ones, so personally I'd avoid them.

Good luck with your choices.

All the alloys it seem these days are very susceptible to scuffing,, which is somewhat to bad design and not providing a rim protection "rim" that contains it to small unnoticeable area.

YEH, I know we should all drive better and avoid kerbs,,, but a lot of these are old square edged granite just waiting to ambush you!!!!

In other countries the kerbs are at circa 60 degrees and avoid these scrapes and easy to drive onto if required  etc.

RANT OVER ;<)

Red and Black is a nice colour combination [emoji106]

We have a few caverns here in Derbyshire, it's the ones that are opening up on the roads that I fear going down. :peek:
