Cruise Control Light???

Featured Replies

I picked up my Octavia (1.6 FSI) a couple of weeks ago and love it :D

I've noticed though that I don't get any warning lights on the dash anywhere when I switch the Cruise Control on- is this right? I would have though you should have got some warning light- the one I've had in other cars is like a picture of a speedo with an arrow pointing to the needle.

I can see in the dash, when the light is right, that there is a picture like the one I mean above, but this never comes on! Have I got a problem with my car, or is there no warning????

Cheers :)

Old Octavia and the Superb do not have warning lights.

Mine is the new Octacia (mk II) so does that mean it should???

I have an Octy2 and there is no warning light on mine. OK, I suppose it is possible to switch it on accidentally, but normally you should be aware that it is engaged since you switch it on yourself.

Having said that, you have to remember that whilst braking will switch it off, accelarating won't, which can make for an interesting moment or two.

I used my cruise [2.0 FSI Manual Elegance] for first time last weekend, on M4/M40 and noticed no light. But, in any case, went back to normal after frightening the life out of myself a few times - it must depend where you live of course, but driving on UK motorways, or anywhere else down here for that matter, doesn't seem cut out for cruise IMHO. Also, I'm not at all sure it suits manual driving. I use cruise nearly all the time in US but there you can go 100s of miles without touching it.

Over here I seem to have to constantly alter the set speed.

BTW I didn't realise it doesn't come off when you accelerate?! US ones I've used do.

Try it and see! I suppose the idea is that when you want to overtake someone, you accelerate to get the manouevre over with as quickly as possible, then return to your previous cruising speed. Works fine in those cases.

What has caught me out a couple of times is setting the cruise at a low speed (in a village with a very active police force!), speeding up once out of the village, then having to slow down for a roundabout. Since I hadn't touched the brakes, the cruise control cut in again when it reached the lower speed I had a set earlier, ruining my graceful approach!

US one I drove didn't disengage CC when you accelerated. Reason behind it is that you may have CC on, then accelerate to get past a car a little more rapidly, and then let it drop back to CC 'set speed' without braking.

If you don't want to hit the brakes just give the 'off' a little nudge and it will disengage without forcefully slowing down :)

PS It's the same on the Furby, in case anyone is interested :P

When cruise is active, you can increase or decrease using the 2 way switch at the end of the LH stalk. I agree that there should be a warning light on when such functions are activated. It's a bit like the front fog lamp warning. Nothing in the instrument pack but there is a light on the main light switch that can only be just about be seen. :(

According to the manual, that's the way it's supposed to work (and does, in my experience).

If you stay at a higher speed for more than (I think) 5 minutes, then the CC is disengaged. Makes sense, if, say, you've just joined a motorway but forget to change the CC speed.

It took me a bit of time to get used to it: you take your foot off the accelerator to slow yourself down, but the car just keeps on goin' ....

Octy II does not have a warning light for CC.

Also bear in mind that it cancels when you depress the clutch as well as the brake pedal.

If you want to reset it to the speed it was before it cancelled, just press the reset switch on the LH stalk (upward click)

Worth knowing that if you press 'Reset' it will try to reach the previous limit as fast as possible... It wont think of saving your fuel if you are in 5th gear on an uphill!.. :)

Ah, the beauty of having a DSG box: it changes down for you

Mine has a nice reflection in the window just around where the edge of the driver's wingmirror is.

As for a CC warning light, , is the fact that the car is drving along by itself not enough of a clue?

I have a Fabia with cruise control, and alas no warning light.

I love cruise, and once you are familiar with all the buttons, it darn useful. I use it all the time, using it to speed up from 30's to 40's etc. A warning light would be nice, but by no means essential imo.

Us Fabia owners are graced with fog light warnings on the dial pod though!

Thanks for the replies :)

A CC warning light isn't essential & it isn't like I don't know I've got it set, just thought it was strange that there was a picture of what appears to be the CC light in the dash board

Cheers anyway :D

I never actually noticed the lights on the main light switch until I read this thread (so much for reading the manual!)

Further investigation revealed the reason: I can't actually see them at all when I'm driving, cos the steering wheel comes in the way.

Now, put that same switch into a left-hand drive car.....

Thanks for the replies :)

Tis slightly strangethat it doesn't have the light as our MK4 Golf does!

Ah, that must explain the difference in price between the two cars then. :D

nice one JP

Volkswagen drivers need a bit more help to spot the obvious things

Got a VW Touran hire car today. It has the aforementioned cruise control light, and what an utter pain in the **** it is. It comes on with the CC master switch, not when you actually activate it. So rather than just clicking the button, i have to fumble around and flick the master switch, then click the set button.

Total waste of time and a real annoyance too. I never turn the switch off.

Cruise is great once you get north of Preston and Lancaster ( yes southerners, such a place exists! Turn left at The Shire and its just beyond Narnia  ) because you can actually use it as it should owing to roads suddenly becoming clear (unless it happens to be a bank holiday when the world and his wife wants to visit the Lake District!). Also stops you answering the men with the hats 'Were you aware that you were travelling at MK III sir?' questions. Forget the light, if only they could provide a stick in the seats to prod you now and again to check your still awake lol.

I like the ideal of a prod stick. I had to switch cruise control off on empty autobahns in Germany in order to keep myself awake.
