Radiator fans won't turn off!

Featured Replies

I wonder if anyone can help please? .. I have a Fabia vRS 06 plate. Was driving it yesterday all running fine, temperature as normal. Pulls on to the drive turns car off and both fans constantly on! I gave it a few minutes but no sign of it stopping! So I've ended up disconnecting it from the battery to stop them, otherwise they'd be on all night! Is it possibly a fan sensor or thermostat switch or something? It only got serviced last week too and typically its a bank holiday so i cant do nowt about it anyway!

There's a fan control module hanging off the nearside chassis leg close to the windscreen washer reservoir and power steering pump, it looks like the picture in this listing and from what I've heard they're not massively reliable.  There's a relay inside that switches both fans on when told to, so either it is getting told to incorrectly, or more likely it has welded itself in the 'on' state.  Actually there are two relays in there, one brings the fans on at low speed, the other brings them on at high speed.

If you unplug the larger of the two connectors, and measure with a multimeter set to Ohms, between all 4 pins on the module, you will see 0 Ohms between two of the pins if a relay is stuck on. This listing has a nice picture of the four pins in question, on the left.

Actually, an easier test to prove it's a relay stuck on is to unplug the smaller, 6-way connector instead, leaving the big one plugged in, and see whether the fans still run (they shouldn't unless there's a relay stuck). Here's a wiring diagram if it's any use to you.
