Replacing main car battery might require CAN-Gateway coding

Does this really need to be altered if you fit a bigger battery?

Yes, even a new exact same size battery, you need to at least input a different serial number, then the type & capacity then make is the least important. Just re-read my posts in the thread from the start & some of the ones from other people who have Audis on this thread from "mannyo"

I have a MK2 Octavia. Surely this is too old for all this tech?

Not 100% certain, but I don't think it has it, well no stop/start.............. anyway you would need to look at the adaptions channels & the measuring block values in the CAN-gateway (19) using VCDS to confirm this.......

I have a 2010 EOS TSi, & replaced the original equipment 70 A/H 096 size battery (made by Exide ES) with a new Exide Premium 77 A/H, (same 096 size) 'cos the old battery

didn't like starting the car when cold.

It's a low-mileage, not used that often, car & it's possible that the previous owners used the battery rather than the alternator to lower / raise the roof.

I'm happy with the new battery, starting is quicker & I had no concerns until & started reading this thread!

Do I "need" to find someone to recode my car to suit the new battery, or is it too old to be lumbered with all this modern technology?

I'm tempted to ask if my wife's '11 Mk.2 FL Octy vRS or my'12 Superb need special attention as / when their batteries need replacing?

TIA for any information......

If it works OK I would think you need not worry.

My simple logic, if the new battery has different characteristics will failing to recode car cause the car to be damaged?   I can't see a way (but if I'm wrong please correct me).  Not recoding may mean the battery doesn't get managed correctly ( used to full effect, and it may not be looked after perfectly by the car, shortening is life a little). But if this is the worst, then don't panic.

Is my logic right?

No.

There are different types of batteries, as well as different ratings.

With the energy recovery systems, stop/start systems and regenerative braking the car needs to know what type of battery (and Ah rating) it has fitted.

So what damage or miss function could result?

For a start, the battery monitoring control unit (5Q0 915 181) itself, and whatever else that decides to take out with it. When you change the parameters in the CAN Gateway, it is this sub-module that is being adapted for the battery that is fitted.

thanks.

I have found some wrong coding of my battery. I have corrected it but still do not display the SOC value. Is still SOC ---%.

Any other suggestions?
