help securing radar detector to dash

Featured Replies

I have come into posession of a radar detector but it has no windscreen mount with it. So i tried using velcro but the velcro will not stick to the dash of my octy

Has anyone else had this problem and got any suggestions on how to actually fasten it to the dash successfully??

Thanks

I have a window mount for my Navman but find it blocks the general view quite a bit and the power cable hanging down is a bit of a nightmare - Going to try to stick some tape of some sort down on the dash to get it to seal right.

Can you get a mount for that detector? Seems odd to not have one at all. I thought it would be essential to make it point the right way.

Radar detectors are illegal in Ireland, but if they were legal  , I would plug it into the cigarette lighter and wedge it between the underside of the headrest and the seat. This means that the detector unit is closer to your ear when it alarms, and also is slightly higher up than if placed on the dashboard (wipers can obscure the units path when on dash). Just make sure that the speaker is not covered by the headrest.

I paid next to nothing for it off ebay and i knew it didn't have the mount with it before i bought it. I was just going to use the velcro with it but the dash seems to not be very receptive to things sticking to it

I am sure they have to be on your dash somewhere for the "eye" to pick up radar/laser signals.

If it is a conventional radar/ laser type, then all it needs is a line of sight out the windscreen. It doesn't matter where it is located as long as it can "see" through the screen, and is not obscured by metal between the radar gun and the detector window. If it is a GPS type, then it will probably need to be on the dashboard, so it can "see" the satelite.

The one I don't have works well under the headrest! I have a Bel remote detector that has yet to be installed. The brain will be fitted in front of the radiator, with two laser sensors mounted front and rear internally.

Simple .......Bluetack ....works a treat

I have considered this but if it is left in the car all the time i am concerned that someone may try and nick it

I have just been and got some "heavy duty" velcro that has supposedly got 50% stonger adhesive but i am still not sure it will work. The packet says that the adhesive reaches maximum strength after 24 hrs so i will leave it til tomorrow before trying the detector on it again.

The octy dash is a pig for sticking stuff to it, I eventually resorted to cleaning the area with a little white spirit, then I used "no more nails" in tape form, it's still there to this very day!

so you used no more nails tape and then fastened the self adhesive velcro to this??

Not quite, My GPS jobbie has a bracket so you can slide the unit off, but its top heavy and nothing else has managed to stick it apart from this tape, I got it in B&Q methinks and its predominantly clear with a red backing tape and it's really strong. But I suppose you could stick the velcro to it and achieve the same result.

Is there no way you could obtain a bracket for your detector?

may give this a try if the "heavy duty" velcro i have just bought doesn't work

It's really good stuff, like I say, I tried loads of other tapes and none worked longer than 5 minutes. I even tried the stuff that cures overnight and that didn't work either.

Best of luck with your sticking

I used the Velcro that came with my Snooper S3. Sticks to my Octy dash like **** to a blanket. I gave the dash a good clean with an alcohol wipe first.

I tried no end of alcohol wipes on mine, maybe the muppet who had it before me cleaned it with silicone or something stupid.

Either way, nothing would take to it

Going out with camera, tape and my navman mount to see if I can get it to stick!

Getting it to stick is one thing, the miracle is keeping it there......;)

Well... :grumpy: Would it stick - would it f***! :D:rofl:

Tape sticks to the dash well, but the mount won't sucker onto anything but glass. Got me thinking about getting a tiny bit of glass and using these doubled sided sticky pads my mate has to stick a 3" square bit of glass to the dash... It looks nice where it would sit if it would stick there.

Well, I got a handsfree kit thats designed to suck to the windscreen BUT I also got a circular piece of plastic with a sticky pad on the back presumably so you can stick it to other surfaces, might be worth visiting Halfrauds to see if the do them as thats where the kit came from. Might not be suitable if your suckers are in a straight line for example.

I tried cleaning mine with white spirit prior to using the self adhesive velcro but it didn't work.

I have used the proper skoda dashboard cleaner though so don't know if this has had any affect

BLUETAC works everytime and if you leave it on for a while its a real swine to get off but you can remove it and no marks will be left.

Just try it .....

I've been all through the heavyduty stuff that leaves marks after or doesn't work......another advantage ...if you want a bit adjustment that you cant get from the cradle just use a bit more of the stuff

It took multiple applications of white spirit and much elbow grease to shift whatever was on the dash.

Worked in the end though so...........
