i'm working down the list of faults on my new to me, 68k fabia . this one happens particularly on setting off or changing gear. sort of a creaking or knocking. any ideas ? thanks

console bushes ? it does sound suspension related. where are the console bushes located ? thanks

They are the rear bushes for the wishbones.  These cars are a little odd, in that the bush is captive in an item called the console, and the wishbone has a peg that pokes through a hole in the bush, rather than the bush being part of the wishbone itself.

Also check the dogbone under the engine. The bushes can fail.

thanks. may be a bit much for me, i'll get it looked at

update on this. been out in it earlier and i can feel this creaking / clunking along the length of the car. maybe i'll have a look at the exhaust hangers later this week
