Defector!

Featured Replies

A follow on from my post in the mk1 section. First post on the mk2 forum just a hello to everyone. I owned my mk1 vrs for nearly 9 years great car tbh but time moves on and sold the car over the weekend. Purchased a lovely race blue Octy Vrs tdi 56plate 69k. The plan was to get it washed up and post some piccies up today but up here in Carlisle right now the weather is awful!! Any potential problems to watch for? It has had the injectors done but there isnt any receipt in the book for this i just wondered if this was normal. Cars running great atm but its on the long life service so 20k miles between services!! I can't get my head round this at all I'm used to changing oil every year.

Welcome to the Mk 2 section!

Would always change oil every year or 10k miles.

I've run all my cars on long life 20K intervals with no problem. My Octy MK2 when sold at 100K miles was running perfectly fine having just 5 services from new, it used no oil and was on the original turbo etc.

My current Audi is also on 20K servicing from new, now on 140K and 11 years old its running perfectly fine with no oil use between services.

As you have gone for the diesel, you must use long life oil regardless of service regime. The long life oil (VW507.01) is low ash and does not clog the DPF as quickly as would otherwise be the case.

Thanks a lot buddy i feel like a fish out of water on the mk2 section! Yeah 20k on the same oil can't be healthy but modern oil i suppose. I'm sure pros and cons will have been discussed before I've got a lot to learn about these cars petrol is all I've ever know. A car with no spark plugs just seems strange!!

Hello buddy a name i recognise!! It's a good discussion really as I'm really struggling to come to terms with 20k intervals. As thats what previous owners have done with no ill effects i will most likely do the same. And 5w30 long life was the oil i used in my mk1 vrs so same oil? The top up bottle i have says for petrol or diesel although i havnt needed to top it up yet. Its gonna be a steep learning curve by the look of it!! They go well these diesels though I'm quite surprised although the power delivery is completely different.

Welcome over to the mk2's mate, I made the same jump a few months back, missing my mk1 but loving the mk2 just as much. I hope you manage to keep the spending down better than I have...it's so addictive!

Cheers buddy it was time to change i think although i dithered for a year!! Lovely cars the mk2 though but the mk1 is a great car I'm sure money permitting I'll have another some day. I don't mod my cars so it'll be kept standard ( i think!! ) but going from petrol to diesel i just havnt got a clue!! It looks like a service every two years is what's gonna be done as thats how the car has been serviced by previous owners and I'm struggling to get my head round that. It's running well though but where's the plugs?!!

It's fine. My Mark 1 Octy covered 125,00 miles in five years, on extended service interval. It was a low power model (1.9D 90PS) but it often went over 30,000 miles between services. The oil looked like gritty treacle but the car never missed a beat.

My Mark 2 CR "only" manages 18,000 between oil changes but so far, so good (53,000).

Rusty sills just above the stonechip paint. The sills of the Mk2 don't flare out like the Mk1 so stones hit the sides of the car.

Also wet leaves behind the wheel arch liners in the sills themselves. Probably doesn't help the rust issue.
