Long day with the Columbus

Featured Replies

I have it all going, not sure if I have any battery drain issues yet but I now have maxidot navi and audio menus and mfsw controls that work. Also have latest maps I could find (v12?) and 2xxx firmware with patched gateway. Does anyone know the cheapest possible Bluetooth option available that will work with a htc m8 and also how do you wire up reverse cameras as I have no other cables other than gps antenna and radio splitter. If I can sort this cheaply I might just keep it after all. I've seen some pretty small reversing camera screens on ebay that would possibly work with the dash cam so as I bought the glasses holder last week thinking of trying to fit one in there. With that, Bluetooth, reversing camera and navi I think I could be happy.

You're correct, v12 are the latest maps so that's good.

If you intend to get full functionally from the unit you need to go to firmware 4120 and as you have what I believe is a C6 unit (please check the hardware is c201) you can probably go to 5268 although there isn't any real  difference to 4120 and I think 5238 is a more stable maximum to aim for. You can then apply the gateway fix '1200_gw_all' and the MFSW fix if you need it. All normal warnings about applying firmware apply so it's entirely at your own risk.

I don't know too much about pre-FL cars but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but as for bluetooth.

The OEM solution will be probably be about £150. As you have an M8 you can use either HFP or rSAP to conenct as the stock firmware appears to support both [1]. Personally I prefer rSAP as it will use an external antenna to ensure maximum signal and also show you SMS if they come through whilst driving, the down side is that your phone will effectively have no SIM installed and therefore no signal/data connection if you intend to use it for navigation or streaming music. This can be solved with one of the newer BT modules as they are able to use 3G and create a WiFi hotspot in the car, the modules for this are 3C8035730D or 3C8035730E but I'm not sure if they will work correctly in a pre-FL due to DDP/BAP differences. Otherwise I'd stick to a DDP/HFP/A2DP module (maybe a 1K8035730D) - rosstech have an excellent page on this [2].

Not sure about RVC's as I've not looked at fitting one yet...  :notme:

Sorry had a brain fart lingers, it is 4020 I have installed, so many numbers I get confused. Got up this morning and no fans on or flat battery so looks like the firmware worked. Thanks so much for taking the time to type all that out, I do appreciate it's a pain answering my questions. I have a habit of buying the wrong parts and wasting money so any advice is appreciated. I saw a box on ebay for a reversing camera but not sure it offers the functions of an oem kit. I'll start looking into the bits you have listed. I did see a Bluetooth module for sale 1K8 035 730 D but it said it was only for bap cars and wasn't sure if it would work, also had no cables so not sure if I could get them

For the Bluetooth you need a module that supports DDP protocol.

I believe the HTC One M8 supports rSAP (remote sim access protocol).

If it does you can get an older rsap only module that works with maxidot etc. I bought mine for £20 off ebay.

This may be of some use:

My module is 5N0-035-730-C.

Thanks Phil, Doing some reading now to find which works for me. Why does everything have to be so complicated?

Lol. Tell me about it!

Took me ages to figure everything out and work out what I needed!

You will also need a wiring loom, mic and mic cable.

Phil

Dont get the the 1k8 module its really old and the Chinese clones you see on eBay are a lottery. For a cheap(er) solution do as Phil has done.

5n0 035 730 a/b/c or 3c8 035 730 (no suffix) are all pretty equivalent and cheaper and work with rSap enabled phones (I believe yours is). Alternatively 5k0 035 730 b or above work using HFP with all phones, but won't show in maxidot.

Langers is correct that the newer modules he mentions don't properly work in pre fl cars (unless you use a further box that costs nearly 100 quid).

Thanks guys, that's enough for me to be going on with... I'll be back to annoy you regarding fitment no doubt.

Sorry to upset things but when I got my M8 I queried the rSAP thing with HTC (as I couldn't get it to work). Bottom line is "no", it don't have it

On the plus side, using the BT kit as handsfree as opposed to premium does allow the phone to used as normal, for say internet etc. & I don't miss SMS via Columbus anyway.

There seems to be several threads about this but the option I went for is the boot release camera & Kufatec interface. Not a cheap setup but excellent performance. If you care to PM MikeHolroyd he can probably tie more info together, as his is the same as mine (but he tends to be a bit tidier about the info than me  ).

Glad I waited before buying anything, I am still waiting for my Can gateway to arrive, if this doesn't fix the battery drain I will likely be getting rid of the Columbus anyway. It is most certainly an excellent system once running but I think it needs some money throwing at is and is best left for the cars it was intended for rather than my lowly 2006 Octavia

Hi all.

Ive been trawling round briskoda and eBay trying to do exactly what i think you've been doing recently Nikonite.

Im trying to upgrade my Stream to something that has everything in one box, but its proving complicated!

Ive got myself a new (well, new to me!) maxidot cluster to begin with.

Next up is head-unit +/- CAN, the car's currently in the garage looking into a coolant disappearing problem (fingers crossed) so i dont know if i'll actually need a new one yet. And then maybe MFSW.

Is there any benefit in doing everything at once, or is it just as easy to do it piecemeal?

Looks like an Amundsen+ would have everything in it, but looks like the screen is significantly smaller than the Columbus, and i suppose if im honest i really want the Columbus.

As the newer bluetooth built in ones go for a whole bunch more, and i cant really find any anyway, i'll need to get the module too.

How did you get on Nikonite?

I have not sorted bluetooth yet, I have fitted an a s revision can gateway though and pleased to say my battery drain issue is fixed. I fitted, cruise control, maxidot, mfsw Columbus, can gateway in that order. I would have liked to have done the lot in one go but some parts were harder to get at the right price than others. I have a mfsw from a superb (same as pre fl l&k) you could have for £30 or 40 with the airbag. The audio buttons work but it has cruise buttons on the left, they did nothing on my car but I have the cruise stalk so don't know if that was why.

I should have also said it depends on the version of Android currently installed, 5.0+ now has it.

I got the OTA Lollipop update quite a while back now. Guess I better revise my search lol

I just got a 5NO 035 730 B, does anyone know the cable I would need for this?

Either of these should be fine:

http://www.carsystems.pl/bluetooth-installation-kit-plug-play-for-premium-module-5n0-and-3c8-foam-cover,id117.html

I grabbed the latter as the foam box makes it look very neat.

As for rSAP on the M8, if its not supported natively then you should be able to root and use this app http://www.android-rsap.com/ works well for me on my M7.

Just for sake of the search, got the kit I listed above and all seems to be working. Appeared on Maxidot and Found my m8 using rsap without issue just got to work out what I'm doing now as I can see my call log but not phonebook. Would I be right to presume all contacts need to be stored on the SIM?

Yes on those older modules that is the case.
