GPS Systems for around

What GPS system would you recommend for general UK driving in the

I have a TomTom Go 700 and have used it in the UK and Holland. I rate it as relatively user-friendly and the map database is good. It is also easy to add extras such as voices and the excellent (and free) UK speed camera database. I have just one reservation - the display can be hard to see at times in sunlight.

I prefer the tomtom interface to the navman. Just seems a bit more logical to me. Each to his own though.....

Buy the Navman from Halfords at the moment and they chuck in a free Snooper!!

I have had the same query myslef and after quite a lot of research I think the Mitac Mio 168 with Tom Tom Software could fit the bill.

Have a look at the above link it might help you.

Whats the advantage of getting TomTom via the Mitac rather than have the TomTom unit. Can you use a pen device with either? or do you have to use the menu buttons.

I dont know anything about nav devices but am warming to the idea of getting one. I notice the Garmin i3 interface looks a little similar to the TomTom but at a much cheaper price but i'm not going to fall into the trap of going to cheap so am currently thinking about the TomTomGo 300.

I've got a Tom Tom Go in the pick up, damn good unit IMHO.

Just bought a garmin i3 for 199 notes - fantastic bit of kit.

Have a Mitac Mio 168 with Copilot - volume is crap - other than that, pretty good.

and quite a bit cheaper than the TomTom 300, but the Ozzy voice add-on may just swing it the TomTom way for me.... f f f f f ****ng turn left

Base TomTom Go 300 is one of the best out there if you don't need the extra phone features of the 500 / 700. 500 / 700 have faster cpu but my Go is a shed load faster than my PDA with tomtom and no messy wires around the dash.

TomTom go has one loads of recent tests, mine takes under a minute to get a lock from boot and the display is clear, battery life is around 6 hours at the moment but it comes with an in car charger also#

Been using a PDA based system for around 3 years with tomtom and the go is just so much neater and you can still add your own POI to it for "safety camera's"

Go's are

Has anyone used the Garmin C330? Saw one in PCWorld and it looked the business! Interface feels much better than TT Go. Couldnt test the navigation as obviously in a building but seemed really good. it contained a 2.2gb hdd with street level maps of the whole of Europe. Anyone used one?

Dixons do TTG300 for

Have to add that POI's and the pocketgps speed camera database can be added very easily to the Garmin i3. It is also *tiny* but the screen is absolutely fine - the whole thing is much smaller than a Go. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles but it does have full postcode search. The thing got me around the SE recently including many trips into Central london - voice prompts are great and well timed and it never put a foot wrong - highly recommended at the price.

Thanks for all the replies.

Based on my findings and the general consensus of opinion on here and other reviews I will likely be going down the TomTom Go 300 route.

We'll probably go for TTG500 as it has the feature of being "almost always" connected to satellites.

um so how does the 300 manage if it's not ''almost always'' connected to satellites? or have I read that wrong.

Based on my credit card bill I may just get a new map. :thumbdwn:

The 300 (which I have and gets a big  ) has to see the sat's to help guide you. If you go through a long tunnel you will lose the sat's and it may take a few seconds for it to pick them up on the other side.

The 500 / 700 have some kind of clever caching system (I guess?) because they carry on the navigation whilst in a tunnel (or other blind spot). That said, last week I was working in liverpool and went through the mersey tunnel and my 300 picked up the sat's within seconds of exiting the tunnel.

It's all on the tomtom site

I have got all the voices if someone needed to store them off site for me, I like the ozzy one, but the Yoda voice is doing it for me at the moment.

lol sounds great. I think i'll sit tight for the TTG 300 and wait for any after xmas bargains :)

and thanks for the info on the 500's sat tracking feature, I think I can live without that....

Do any of these devices have an output port/cable that could be used to connect up a 7.5" screen in the car to display the map?

So for asking the question.

Is it better to go for a unit with post code search than not ?? will this be a better user friendly unit than one without ??

If so is the TomTom Go 300 the one to get ??

Thanks in advance.

Mark

Sat Nav is flavour of the month at the moment with everybody buying for Xmas. But it is a bit of a minefield and there is a lot of rubbish out there. the market leaders are Tom Tom with Navigon second.

My advice would be to take your time in choosing to make sure you get best for you and the way that you want to use it. Suggest you look at the forums at www.pocketgpsworld.com before making your decision - lots of good advice. that is also the place you can pick up the free camera alerts.

Buy the Navman from Halfords at the moment and they chuck in a free Snooper!!

Which does seem like a good deal until you realise that the 159 they charge for the navman is a total rip off! Also the snooper with a supposed RRP of 130 goes for 70 on ebay
