Goto change steering rack

Featured Replies

What's best way to do this ours at 170000 miles is leaking out the end of the gator. I'm going from memory does the sub frame have to come off any tips and tricks. Car is a fabia 1.9tdi so not got that much room under the bonnet I have also goto find out if rack is a white or brown plug as well

Subframe off is the easiest way to do it, you can leave the wishbones attached, leave the struts in place, release the TRE's from the hubs, release droplinks from ARB, drop it and drag it all out together. It's a good time to replace the console bushes and ARB bushes as well.

Thank-you the console bushes are brand new fitted about 4 weeks ago with new wishbones was then I noticed steering rack had play and leaking oil

OK I've just done this last weekend and I'll have to do it again next week thanks to eurocar parts...

You can do it on the drive with a helper as the sub frame is heavy. Also the higher the car is the better.

When you get the rack check it lines up with your current rack. If the steering pinion is off you'll have to reset the steering wheel as well. Turns out this isn't a problem, the Audi A2 uses the same rack but is set differently. EuroCar parts stock them as the same serial number. Before you order ur rack check which coloured terminal connector you have. Mine was brown but they could be white or black as well. Brown and black connectors are one style of rack while the white is another. It took me around 6 hours but included rebuilding my wishbones with fresh grease.
