Well how much is this gonna cost then?

Featured Replies

I have a 2007 octavia vrs diesel.

I was going to trade it in against something else but can't make the figures work for me so I've decided to spend some cash on giving the vrs. At the minute it has the following problems:

Air con not working - apparently it has gas? I've heard this is common?

ESP not working - told this is common too.

12v socket not working.

Rear n/s door damaged and dented

Rear bumper cracked

Rear o/s light broken

2x new tyres needed

All 4 wheels need a refurb.

Quite a list there. Any estimates how much it'll cost to put right?

If the AC has gas, it could be as simple as a £25 pressure switch, or could be the compressor failed that's £££s.

ESP not working could be a failed ABS sensor which is around £40, or it could be the ABS pump, which again is £££.

Have you checked the fuses for the 12v socket?

Not yet. Will have a check.

The first 2 need fault codes reading.

The bodywork needs going to a bodyshop, preferably not one that's "$insurance_company approved" because they're likely to be more expensive.

I'm tempted to try breakers for the bodywork.think that will be cheapest.

I'm in the same boat bodywork wise I need a drivers door but when they want £100 + for one I'd want to know it was a very good match. Likely gonna need spraying too otherwise

Breakers will mean you probably won't get a perfect colour match. Depends how bothered you are on the bodywork being 100%

As said, get the error codes read for the A/C and ESP issues. If it's the compressor these are still quite big money, budget £400-500. ESP could be the TEVES controller, which is quite a common fault. Not sure on the price for that.

12V could be a fuse. Have you checked?

2x new tyres needed - depends what you're after, how you drive it and what you want the tyres to do. I'd budget £100 a corner, but could be more/less depending on your requirements.

All 4 wheels need a refurb - again personal preference, dependant on finish and quality of work. Budget £50-70 per wheel, but can depend on the local area too - labour costs, competition etc etc.

So all in all, depending on the diagnosis for A/C and ESP, plus the bodywork, £1500-2000 total?

Yeah. I was thinking probably about 2k.

Re the A/C, it could also be the condenser (and that's both a difficult thing to confirm and an expensive thing to replace as the front of the car has to be virtually dismantled to do the job) or even one of the metal pipes between the condenser and the pump ("relatively" cheap and easy to do) - both of these things happened to my car, and the first one also cost me a compressor change before it was diagnosed as the condenser!

OTOH 1 - if it is the compressor, could it just be the clutch that has gone as I have heard that they can fail? These can be found on ebay and seem to be a lot cheaper than a complete compressor, but I don't know how difficult they are to change.

OTOH 2 - a brand new genuine VAG-Skoda rear light cluster from ebay for about £56 in 2014, and it's very easy/quick to change.
