oil leak and mystery bracket 2000 1.4 mpi

Featured Replies

i'm steadily working through the issues on my 1.4mpi. i have today replaced the rocker cover gaskets and grommets after throwing away the engine cover.

i seem to have a persistent oil weep that i though was the rocker cover gasket and yet may be but ........... the rear left head bolt looking from the front of the car is bolted through a black bracket. does anyone know what this bracket is for as on mine it appears to have no use. the oil leak could be from the bolt that this bracket is bolted on with.

the bracket is shown in the following pics at 11 o clock to the push on oil filler under the bigger breather.

can i remove this and re tighten the bolt with no ill effects ? should I / can i just re tighten the bolt going through the bracket and leave the bracket in place with no ill effects ?

any advice appreciated.

Ooh, there seems to be a metal plate thingy missing off yours. Hold on, I'll nip out and take a pic of mine for you.

That looks like it might be quite useful structurally! (And electrically, via the earth lead).

The earth lead is my own addition :)

Oh, I see.

Possibly that plate got missed off during a chain replacement on the OP's car?

Could well be, yes. The plate is part number 6Q0199588. Probably be able to get one second-hand though.

I was just looking up a part number for it, and noticed a chassis-number dependency. Maybe something else changed and obsoleted it?

Looking up for a 2003 car here. Item 19c. Actually it's only from a certain chassis number onwards. ??

Too late for me to be thinking now. :)

^ Ah, I see. Yeah, maybe they deleted it then

Or a later addition.

What year's your car Mr OP?

Looking at his earlier posts, it would appear his car is a 2000 model. So maybe they added the plate later but it seems odd that the bracket with bolt holes is already there.

That's solved then probably, except to explain the unneeded attachment on the engine. :D

Newer head fitted to original engine, bringing bracket with it?

yes its a 2000 model. the issue is the possible leak around the rear left corner head bolt. would it be safe to just tighten it ? i will look into the plate though thanks

Don't worry about the plate. I've been doing some Googling and earlier models didn't have it.

I doubt it's leaking past the bolt. You need to clean it all up and find out where it's coming from. It might be from the previous rocker gasket, oil filler cap/cover seal or maybe there's a hole in that rubber breather pipe.

thats very possible as its quite gunked up. i'll clean it up tomorrow and see. thanks. i have had a leak since fitting the new oil filler cap but now the rocker gasket has changed it may well have sorted it. cheers for the input.

No probs. You might find that once you clean it up it might not be leaking anymore.

You can get new rocker gasket seals & bolt seals from the dealers parts dept & do an engine flush like I did to my mates MPi here..........................

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/208388-why-you-should-use-wynns-engine-flush/

new rocker gasket fitted but the plumbs at the local stealer gave me the wrong bolt seals. new ones here by tuesday. no leaks from the rocker gasket . dry as a bone. oil change next week and i'm debating whether to use a flush or not
