Gearbox oil change - Gearbox weaping oil around sump plug

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I had a nosey at my console bushes earlier and noticed my gear box is weaping a bit out of the sump plug. It's a hex screw by the looks of it however I have read it can be a security spline bit on some cars?

The one question I have is, does the gearbox sump plug need a copper washer like the engine sump? It doesn't look like it? If it doesn't it might just need nipping up to stop the slight leak.

Also, have other people experienced there sumps weaping a bit around the drain plug on the gearbox?

I've also read the VAG gearbox oil is G060726A2. Is this the only option or are there suitable alternatives that are more readily available (like from Halfords, I have a trade card and a discount card).

Thanks in advance.

would prefer a bit of ptfe tape to cranking it up tight as it is a taper thread if I remember right

Yes I wouldn't have been tempted to swing off it, was just thinking if it did have a washer it might benefit from a slight nip.

I might just go to TPS in the week and have a nosey on etka and see what parts are on their database.

Do not use ptfe tape, it is a taper plug & has no washer, just clean the threads & lightly reoil with new oil & do up to torque setting & mine was a security 12 point spline

I used millers motorsport on my fabia 75/90w I think?....can't remember............

Manual gearbox filler & drain plugs = 25Nm (18lbf ft)

I think I'll be using 75w80 from what I've read but I won't be paying £25 a litre for the the VAG stuff that's for sure. In fact I wouldn't be changing it at all if I wasn't having to mess about with this sump plug! Lol

Mine is defo a hex head, I'm just waiting for the bit to come from eBay now before I go any further with this.

What fluid done folk use and how much you need?

Cheers

Fuchs titan 75w80 looks like a possible option and 3 litres will be needed as I think the gearbox holds about 2.3 litres.

You will need a special splined socket (see attachment) mine does.

Just going through the process of changing my gear-box oil, as the old Fabia VRS is 10 year old next month.

Your quite correct 2.3 litres maximum gear-box oil capacity..

Bought 15/05/2015 from 'OPIE OILS' Fully Synthetic SAE 75W 80 API GL-5 : 3 litres for £27.00

Getting oil from Skoda dealers was quoted £29.00 litre !!

You could always remove the filler/level plug to see if thread is tapered or otherwise.
