Just switched from 18"s to 16"s

Featured Replies

I have a 2012 Superb elegance and I love the car, hate the ride. I was looking to change the wheels for something more comfortable with a better ride, not worried about the looks so much as the comfort

but I wondered about upsetting the speedo readings and/or the tyre inflation warning. Is there a recommended type of 16" alloy for the superb? Also is there any chance of selling the originals, 18" with nearly new Continentals 225 by 40,

two brand new, two part worn?

There are Superb's leaving the factory on both 16" and 17" inch rims all with the same speedo calibration.

The smaller diameter rim is offset by the higher profile tyre so the rolling radius remains - thus no effect on the accuracy of the speedo.

The 16" alloy most commonly fitted to the Superb is the Spectrum - standard fit on the Greenline...

The Triffid is 17" (standard fit on SE)...

And then the Thermisto from your Elegance (polished /diamond cut which is a weak finish and delaminates)...

Most people look to upgrade to larger alloys so your 18" Thermisto's will sell well, there are a few sets on eBay now that are in poor condition with worn tyres for big bucks.

Watch this listing, they will sell for well over £300 (I've been watching out for a set of 17's for a few months now so am a used Skoda alloy expert  :D )

These are battered but still asking for £400 (although they have been listed now a couple of times!)...

That is the replacement for the Spectrum on the latest facelift Superb.

I post for those interested in tyre-wear figures if considering the move to 16-inch wheels.

The front pair lasted 76,000 miles before needing to be changed.

The rear tyres are still unchanged. Current car mileage is 80,000. Will probably last a further 30,000 miles i.e. to 110,000 miles

The tyres are Continental Premium Contact 2E. Camskill still sell them at £54.99 each delivered. Buy a pair and you get a free night's hotel stay somewhere. It makes for pretty cheap motoring!

Car is MY12 Elegance GreenLine fitted as standard with 16" Spectrum alloys.

Now that's some mileage you are getting on those tyres and pretty low cost by the sounds of it too! I did get 75,000 Kms (not miles!) years ago on either 15 or 16" tyres and I thought that was good!

Lucky to get 30k Kms my 18s now [emoji25]

Not so much a replacement as the Superb S still has them, they are in addition to the Spectrum, I have the 16" Helix alloys on my Elegance.
