2004 1.2 hpt is it belt or chain?

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm looking at a fabia 1 2004 1.2 hpt 6 valve (i think). Could anyone tell me whether it has a chain, or belt. It has full history & 49k on the clock & service book says toothed belt was replaced at 30k. Now someone tells me that this engine is chain driven??? Any help please. Cheers.

It's chain. The service book doesn't have a "linked chain" box to tick so possibly just ticked the toothed belt box.

Cheers hutchy! Do you think Skoda replaced the chain at 30k! Don't sound good then.

They are known for failing, the guides and tensioner can both fail, done two recently, one had around 20,000 miles on the clock so it's possible!

It's a second skoda (for the wifey) lol. Looked at loads of 1.2's & a lot of them are showing 90-120k & are commanding IRO £100-1500. Makes one think the timing chain should be reliable. It's a bit out of my league, being a 1.9 pd driver. Any input is appreciated though. Malc.
